Date: 25 / 03 / 2008  Time:  10:49
Bethlehem – Ma'an –

European Parliament Vice President Luisa Morgantini visited An-Najah National University in the West Bank city of Nablus on Monday, calling for Israel to lift its blockade of the Gaza Strip in order to fulfill its obligations under international law.

"This is the only way to achieve a just and lasting peace in order to give more credibility to the peace process through reinforcing the negotiations based on the UN resolutions and on the right of Palestinians and Israelis to live in two States, in peace and security," Morgantini said.

Speaking to a large audience of students and professors, Morgantini noted that Israel, as the occupying power, is bound by the Geneva Conventions to guarantee the flow of humanitarian aid and essential services to the Gaza Strip.

Morgantini that the European Union, out of respect for international law, should pressure Israel end its occupation of Palestinian land.

University President Rami Hamdallah said, "To have the vice president of the European Parliament on our campus and working with her to help us to establish new ties with European universities is a tremendous honor for An-Najah."
