US Soldier,14 Iraqis Killed, Including 8 Executed by Death Squads, According to July 14, 2008 News Reports

Editor's Note:

Only God knows how many Iraqis are killed everyday. The following represents part of the reporting but readers are advised that the actual number of deaths should very much exceed what's reported.

Concerning deaths of US soldiers, only those US citizens who die in Iraq are included in the statistics. There are no published statistics about US soldiers who die of their injuries after that. There are no published statistics about the deaths or injuries of the private army soldiers (security contractors), or about those without US citizenship.

It is noteworthy that May 20, 2008 news reports showed that death squads which execute Iraqis on daily basis are no longer hiding themselves. Previously, Sunni leaders pointed to Mahdi Army and Badr militiamen as the perpetrators. Now, death squads are composed of the US-recruited Sahwa fighters and policemen (which is an opportunity for US forces command to sever relations with these fighters).

Despite the fact that there are scores of organizations involved in the Iraq war, the Iraqi government officials prefer to refer to them as Alqaeda gunmen for propaganda purposes, as mentioned in the June 4, 2008 news report. For accuracy purposes, the term "Alqaeda gunmen" may be replaced with "Iraqi fighters."

3 Sahwa fighters wounded in blast, 3 bodies found in Diala

Diala - Voices of Iraq
Monday , 14 /07 /2008  Time 8:33:48
DIALA, July 14 (VOI) –

Three US-recruited Sahwa tribal fighters were wounded when an improvised explosive device (IED) went off near their vehicle east of Ba'aquba city on Monday while policemen found three unidentified bodies in al-Muqdadiya district, a security source said.

"The three Sahwa fighters were passing on the main road in the village of al-Makhifa, Abi Saida district, east of Ba'aquba, when an IED went off near their vehicle, leaving them wounded," the source, who is from the joint security coordination center in Diala province, told Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq – (VOI) on condition of anonymity.

The Sahwa councils are anti-Qaeda fighters working in coordination with the Multi-National Force (MNF) and the Iraqi government. These councils were set up in a number of Iraqi provinces such as Anbar, Diala, Ninewa, and Salah al-Din with the aim of bolstering political and local tribal powers to fight armed groups, particularly al-Qaeda network, in those areas. These councils are usually led by tribal chiefs or notables in the provinces.

In another incident, the same source said policemen, in association with local residents, found on Monday morning three decomposed unidentified bodies in the district of al-Muqdadiya, (45 km) northeast of Ba'aquba.

Diala province extends to the northeast of Baghdad as far as the Iranian border. Its capital is Ba'aquba, 57 km northeast of Baghdad. It covers an area of 17,685 square kilometers (6,828 sq mi).
A large portion of the province is drained by the Diala River, a major tributary of the Tigris.

Because of its proximity to two major sources of water, Diala's main industry is agriculture, primarily dates grown in large Date Palm groves. It is also recognized as the orange capital of the Middle East.
In January 2008 Operation Phantom Phoenix was launched in an attempt to eradicate the remnants of al-Qaeda network following the Diala province campaign between 2006 and 2007.

Bomb reportedly targets US military vehicle near ‘Anah.

In a dispatch posted at 4:45pm Baghdad time Sunday afternoon, the Yaqen News Agency reported that a high-explosive bomb went off by a US military patrol near ‘Anah, 300km northwest of Baghdad.

Yaqen reported witnesses as saying that the attack took place on Water Project Road south of the city.  Fire trucks and Iraqi police together with tribal “Awakening” police rushed to the scene and surrounded the area, after which mass arrests of local residents were carried out.

The last week has witnessed an increase in attacks on US and Iraqi regime forces in the areas of Rawah, al-Hadithah, and ‘Anah – an area that has largely been passive for a year and a half thanks to cooperation between local tribes and American occupation forces against the al-Qa‘idah organization.  In recent weeks al-Qa‘idah has reportedly been reviving its activities and improving its relations with tribes in western Iraq.

Then after a crowd had gathered on the scene, a second bomb went off moments later, wounding eight people, four of them policemen.  Several nearby houses were damaged in the explosions.

After a year and a half during which al-Fallujah and most of al-Anbar Province had been largely quiet, the al-Qa‘idah organization has been attempting to resume activities in the area in recent weeks.

Ninwa Province.
Al-Mawsil.

Shabak minority representative accuses US-backed Kurdish separatist party of Saturday’s murder of Shabak activist near al-Mawsil.

In a dispatch posted at 2:05pm Baghdad time Sunday afternoon, the Yaqen News Agency reported that Hanin Qadu, representative of the Shabak minority in the Iraqi Parliament accused the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), a US-backed Kurdish separatist party led by Mas‘ud Barzani, of being responsible for the murder of a member of the Shabak Democratic Coalition in al-Mawsil on Saturday.

Yaqen reported Qadu as saying that the KDP was responsible for the killing of Mal‘ab ‘Abbas Kazim, member of the Political Bureau of the Shabak Democratic Coalition, who was gunned down near Ba‘shiqah, 30km east of al-Mawsil on Saturday.

Qadu said that Mal‘ab Kazim had been active in opposing the Kurdisation of the Ninwa area and of its annexation by the Kurdistan separatist region in northern Iraq.  He said that Kazim had received telephone threats from the KDP, demanding that he stop opposing their expansionist drive.  In response, Kazim had initiated legal action against the KDP prior to his murder.

On Saturday, Yaqen reported a source in the provincial government as saying that gunmen shot and killed the member of the Shabak ethnic minority near the village of ‘Umar Qaji in the Ba‘shiqah area, 30km east of al-Mawsil.  Yaqen noted that Ba‘shiqah is an ethnically mixed area where “Christians, Yazidis, Arabs, Kurds, and Shabak reside.”

The Shabak are a minority listed as numbering 80,000 in the official 1977 census and resident in the Ninwa area.  A deputy representing the Shabak in the US-installed parliament, Hanin al-Qadu, asserts that the minority numbers between 300,000 and 400,000 persons.

The Shabak speak a language similar to Zakaki and Kurdish and many follow a religion that reportedly is similar to that of the Yazidis.  Other Shabaks are Muslim and practice a version of Sufism.

Since the US invasion of Iraq in 2003 American-backed Kurdish separatist parties have tried to assert control over Shabak areas with a view to annexing them to an eventual Kurdish state.  The Democratic Shabak Coalition seeks separate representation for the Shabak community and its members have been the target of repression by Kurdish separatist Peshmergah gunmen on occasion.

The KDP is headed by Mas‘ud Barzani, currently the US-installed President of the separatist Kurdistan region created by US occupation forces in northern Iraq.

In a dispatch posted at 8:06pm Baghdad time Sunday evening, Yaqen reported that the KDP had, unsurprisingly, denied involvement in the murder of the Shabak activist.

Policeman gunned down in front of home in eastern al-Mawsil Saturday evening.

In a dispatch posted at 10:15am Baghdad time Sunday morning, the Yaqen News Agency reported that a member of the bodyguard of the governor of Ninwa Province was killed in an armed attack in al-Mawsil on Saturday evening.

Yaqen reported a source in the provincial government as saying that gunmen shot and killed a policeman who serves as one of the governor’s bodyguards in an attack that took place in front of the policeman’s home in the ‘Adan neighborhood to the east of al-Mawsil.  The policeman was outside his home when a car drove up, and a man got out who proceeded to shot the policeman with a pistol.

Since 10 May, the US and its Iraqi regime allies have been waging an offensive against the al-Qa‘idah organization in al-Mawsil and surrounding Ninwa Province.
