Yasser Abed Rabbo: Palestinians Threaten to Freeze Talks Because of Continuing Israeli Theft of Lands

Palestinians Threaten to Freeze Talks

AL-QUDS (Occupied Jerusalem), July 10, 2008

Al-Alam News

Palestinians were considering a moratorium on their talks with the Israeli regime over continued construction of illegal settlements in Al-Quds, on the occupied lands, a senior Palestinian official said.

Palestinian negotiator Yasser Abed Rabbo told a news conference Thursday that the leadership is "studying and considering the possibility of freezing all relations with the Israeli government, including the negotiations."

Abed Rabbo cited the Israeli regime's perseverance in building new settlements in Palestinian territory, especially in Al-Quds, as the reason behind the consideration.

The Palestinian negotiator, who is also secretary general of the Palestine Liberation Organization, said the Israeli measure was a violation of the understandings of the Annapolis Conference and an attempt to undermine the process.

He was referring to a US-hosted conference last November in which the occupying regime and the Palestinians agreed to resume fence-mending talks after an eight-year freeze.

Abed Rabbo's remarks came a day after it was announced that the Israeli planning committee had approved the construction of 1,800 new homes in Abu Ghneim, also know as Har Homa to Israelis, and Pisgat Ze'ev.

Israel captured East Al-Quds in the 1967 Middle East war and later annexed it in a move never recognized by the international community.

Abed Rabbo's comments were more likely a reflection of Palestinian unhappiness than a real indication of Palestinian intent to break off talks.
