Baghdad, Jan 8, (VOI)- 

Iraqi security forces killed a gunman, detained 14 wanted suspects and defused seven explosive charges during operations staged in eastern and western Baghdad over the past 24 hours, the spokesman for Baghdad's security plan Fardh al-Qanoon (Enforcing the Law) said on Tuesday.

"Iraqi security forces killed a gunman and arrested three suspected armed men in central Karkh and Kadhimiya neighborhood in northern Baghdad," Brigadier Qassem Atta told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI).

Five unknown bodies found in Baghdad

Baghdad, Jan 8, (VOI) - 

Iraqi police patrols found on Tuesday five unknown bodies dumped in different parts of the Iraqi capital Baghdad, a police source said.
"Police patrols found five unidentified bodies in different areas of Baghdad, most of them were found in Baghdad's western side (al-Karkh)," the source told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI).

"Three corpses were found in different neighborhoods of al-Karkh: one in each al-Doura, al-Bayaa and al-Aamel neighborhoods," he explained.
"Two bodies were found in al-Ubeidi and al-Fudaylieya neighborhoods in Baghdad's eastern side of Rasafa," the source added.
"Most of the bodies found bore signs of gunshot wounds to different parts of the body, mainly to the head," he noted.

Five bodies of same family found in Diala

Baaquba, Jan 7, (VOI)- 

Five bodies of the same family were found on Monday northeast of Ba'aquba, an official police source said.
"Khaniqeen police forces found five bodies of the same family thrown on the main road near Qurat Teba district, northeast of Ba'aquba," the source, who preferred to remain anonymous, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI).

"Unknown gunmen had kidnapped the five persons from their house in the district yesterday and took them to an unknown place," he explained.
Khaniqeen is located 155 km northeast of Ba'aquba, the capital of Diala, which lies 57 km northeast of Baghdad.

Suicide attack kills cop, injures 5 persons in Baghdad

Baghdad, Jan 8, (VOI)- 

A policeman was killed and three others were injured when a suicide bomber blew himself up at a checkpoint in al-Madaaen region, south of Baghdad, while two mortar shells landed on the same region, wounding two civilians, a police source said on Tuesday.

"A suicide bomber blew up an explosive belt strapped to his body in front of a police checkpoint in al-Madaen region south of Baghdad, killing a policeman and injuring three more, including a policeman," the source told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI).

"Security force cordoned off the area, preventing pedestrians or vehicles from entering the region," he also said.

Meanwhile, the same source said that two mortar rounds hit a residential area in al-Madaaen region, injuring two persons and destroying some parts of a house.

Civilian killed, 3 unknown bodies found in Mosul

Mosul, Jan 8, (VOI)- 

A civilian was killed on Tuesday in an improvised explosive device explosion south of Mosul, while police patrols found three unidentified corpses in different areas of the city, said a police source.

"A roadside bomb went off on al-Shura district road, south of Mosul, killing a civilian and causing severe material damage to his car," the source, who asked to be unnamed, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI).

Meanwhile, the same source said, "police patrols found this afternoon three bullets-riddled bodies: one in al-Qahera neighborhood in northern Mosul, while the two remaining bodies were found in al-Mulawatha and al-Sahagi regions in western Mosul."

Mosul, the capital of Ninewa, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.

Two workers' bodies found in Sulaimaniya

Sulaimaniya, Jan 8, (VOI) - 

Police forces found two bodies of workers in a house under construction west of Sulaimaniya, a source from the Sulaimaniya emergency police department said on Tuesday.

"A citizen informed the police of the two bodies in a house under construction in Kani Kourda west of Sulaimaniya," Lieutenant Umed Mohammad Ahmad told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI).

"They hold Arab nationalities and were working as two doormen in the same house," he added.

"The bodies of Ivan Hamas Mutlaq, 22, and Ahmad Islamil, 29, were found in the house," he said.

"Preliminary investigations indicate that the cause of death is the exposure to cold or gasses resulting from the nearby generator," the lieutenant noted.

2 persons wounded in separate attacks in Diala

Ba'aquba, Jan 8, (VOI) - 

A woman was wounded on Tuesday in a roadside bomb blast in Muqdadiya, while a civilian was injured in a separate attack in Khaniqeen, an official security source said.

"An explosive device went off near a house in Muqdadiya, northeast of Ba'aquba, injuring a woman," the source, who requested anonymity, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI).
"She was sent to a nearby hospital for treatment," he added.
"A civilian was injured when unknown armed men opened fire on him in al-Saadiya region in Khaniqeen district, northeast of Ba'aquba," the source continued.
Ba'aquba, the capital of Diala, lies 57 km northeast of Baghdad.

2, including officer, killed in violence in Baghdad

Baghdad, Jan 8, (VOI) – 

Unknown gunmen killed a Ministry of Interior officer and an official from the tax department in two separate incidents in the Iraqi capital, Iraqi police said on Tuesday.

"On Tuesday morning, unknown gunmen opened fire on a colonel from the Ministry of Interior in Baghdad's southeastern area of al-Za'afaraniya, killing him on the spot," a police source, who requested anonymity, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI).

"In another incident, a group of armed men opened fire on a vehicle carrying an assistant to the head of al-Mansour Tax Department, western Baghdad, killing him on the spot," the source added, providing no further details.

Western Baghdad’s municipal council chief assassinated

Baghdad, Jan 8, (VOI) – 

The head of Yarmuk municipal council was killed and two of his bodyguards wounded in an explosive charge attack that targeted his vehicle in western Baghdad, Iraqi police said on Tuesday.

"A roadside improvised explosive device went off near a vehicle carrying Yarmuk municipal council chief Saleh Mansour Hussein and two of his security personnel," a police source, who requested anonymity, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI).

"The explosion killed Hussein and injured his bodyguards," the source explained.

Yarmuk is a predominantly Sunni neighborhood in western Baghdad.
During the past two days, the Iraqi capital witnessed a remarkable escalation of attacks against awakening council members that left many of them killed, wounded or kidnapped.

Several awakening councils have been set up in a number of Iraqi provinces, including Anbar, Diala, Ninewa and Salah al-Din, with the aim of building a pan-tribal alliance against al-Qaeda. The councils are usually chaired by tribal leaders who have forged an alliance with the Iraqi security apparatus and U.S. forces.

3 family members killed in attack in Huwaija

Kirkuk, Jan 8, (VOI) – 

Three people of the same family were killed in an armed attack in the district of al-Huweija, southwest of Kirkuk, on Tuesday, an official security source in Kirkuk police said. 

"Unidentified gunmen opened fire on a civilian vehicle carrying a man, his wife and his son, who is a soldier in the Iraqi army, in al-Hueweija, (70 km) southwest of Kirkuk, killing them instantly," the source, who refused to be named, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). Kirkuk, a city of mixed Shiite, Sunni and Kurdish population, lies 250 km northeast of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.
