Baghdad, Jan 7, (VOI) - 

Iraqi police patrols found seven unknown bodies dumped in different parts of the Iraqi capital Baghdad over the past 24 hours, a police source said on Monday.

"Police patrols found seven unidentified bodies in different areas of Baghdad, most of them were found in Baghdad's western side (al-Karkh)," the source told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI).

"Four corpses were found in different neighborhoods of al-Karkh: two in al-Doura neighborhood and one in each al-Bayaa and al-Mahmoudiya," he explained.

"Three bodies were found in Baghdad's eastern side of Rasafa: two in Sulaikh neighborhood and one in al-Shaab neighborhood," the source added.
"Most of the bodies found bore signs of gunshot wounds to different parts of the body, mainly to the head," he noted.

6 gunmen killed, 218 wanted men captured, in past 48 hours

Baghdad, Jan 7, (VOI) - 

Iraqi security forces killed six gunmen, freed 4 captives, and detained 218 wanted men during combat operations in several parts of the Iraqi capital over the past 48 hours, the spokesman for Baghdad's security plan Fardh al-Qanoon said on Friday.

"Under the security plan, Iraqi security forces killed two gunmen and found a weapons depot in southern Baghdad's regions," Brigadier Qassem Atta told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI) by phone.

"The forces freed a captive, arrested 170 wanted men, and defused a bomb in al-Rasafa," the Brigadier highlighted.

"In al-Adhamiya in northern Baghdad, the forces detained seven wanted men and defused a bomb in al-Karada region in southwestern Baghdad," he added.
"They released three captives and arrested seven wanted men in Sadr City in eastern Baghdad," Atta explained.

"Six wanted men were captured in Abu Gharieb region, while seven suspected gunmen were captured in al-Ragi in northern Baghdad," he noted.
"A weapons cache was discovered in al-Mahmoudiya region in southern Baghdad, three gunmen were gunned down, and an explosive charge was defused in al-Nahrawan region," the brigadier pointed out.

The Iraqi government launched Fardh al-Qanoon plan in mid-February 2007 in a bid to fight gunmen in Baghdad and its surrounding areas.

IED leaves five casualties in eastern Baghdad

Baghdad, Jan 7, (VOI) - 

A civilian was killed and four others were injured when an explosive charge went off near a police checkpoint at one of the Sadr City's entrances in eastern Baghdad, a police source said on Monday. "An explosive device, planted under a vehicle, exploded near Sahet Muthafar in Sadr City in eastern Baghdad near a police checkpoint," the source, who wished to remain unnamed, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). "The blast killed one civilian and injured four, including two policemen, he added.

Anti-Qaeda (US-recruited) fighter killed, 3 gunmen detained in Ba'aquba

Ba'aquba, Jan 7, (VOI) - 

One Awakening Council (US-recruited) fighter was killed on Monday and three suspected al-Qaeda gunmen were detained during armed confrontations in northern Baaquba, an official security source said. "One Awakening Council fighter was killed this morning in armed clashes with al-Qaeda group," the source told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI) under condition of anonymity. 

"The council's fighters arrested three al-Qaeda gunmen during the clashes and delivered him to the police," he added. The Awakening Councils are anti-Qaeda fighters working in coordination with the Multi-National Force-Iraq (MNF-I) and the Iraqi government. Baaquba, the capital of Diala, is 57 km northeast of Baghdad.

Southern Baghdad twin blasts kill 1, wound 4

Baghdad, Jan 7, (VOI) – 

Two explosive charges detonated consecutively in southern Baghdad, killing one civilian and wounding four others, Iraqi police said on Monday.

"The first explosive device which was planted on a road in Baghdad's southern area of al-Jardiya went off on Monday afternoon, killing one civilian," a security source told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI).

"Shortly after the first blast, another explosive charge exploded near police personnel trying to evacuate the victim, wounding four individuals, including policemen," the source indicated.

Several bombings and suicide attacks hit the Iraqi capital on Monday, leaving dozens killed or wounded.

The attacks come following weeks of relative calm in the Iraqi capital, which prompted many displaced persons to return to their homes in Baghdad.

IED attack leaves 20 casualties in central Baghdad

Baghdad, Jan 7, (VOI) – 

An improvised explosive device (IED) attack near the Technological University in central Baghdad left four people killed and 16 others wounded on Monday, police said.

"An IED planted near some peddlers off the Technological University in Baghdad went off on Monday afternoon, killing four and wounding 16 others including university students," an Iraqi police source, who requested anonymity, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI).

Earlier on Monday police said 14 people, including the Aazamiya Sahwa (Awakening) Council leader, were killed and 25 others injured in two suicide attacks with a car bomb and an explosive belt that targeted the Sunni Endowment in al-Aazamiya area, north of Baghdad.

"A suicide bomber detonated his explosive belt at the main gate of the Sunni Endowment in al-Aazamiya, killing Riad al-Samarraie and a number of his bodyguards while entering the building," an Iraqi police source who did not want his name mentioned told VOI.

"Minutes later another suicide bomber blew up his explosive vehicle among cars and people carrying the wounded from the first attack to the al-Nu'man hospital, killing and wounding more civilians," the source said.
