26 Iraqis Killed in War Attacks, Including 12 Executed by Death Squads, According to a January 5, 2008 Report 12 unknown bodies found in Baghdad Baghdad - Voices of Iraq Sunday , 06 /01 /2008 Time 9:35:29 Baghdad, Jan 5, (VOI)- Iraqi police patrols on Saturday found 12 unknown bodies dumped in different parts of the Iraqi capital Baghdad, a police source said. "Police patrols found 12 unidentified bodies in different areas of Baghdad, most of them were found in Baghdad's western side (al-Karkh)," the source told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). "Nine corpses were found in different neighborhoods of al-Karkh: six in al-Doura, two in al-Aamel and one in al-Saydiya," he explained. "Three more bodies were found in neighborhoods of Zayounah, al-Jaderiyah and Baghdad al-Jadidah in Rasafa, eastern side of Baghdad," the source added. "Most of the bodies found bore signs of gunshot wounds to different parts of the body, mainly to the head," he noted. "Coalition forces captured a suspected Special Groups leader and detained eight other suspects early on Thursday during operations to disrupt criminal element networks in the Huwaysh area, north of Baghdad," the U.S. army said in a statement received by the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). Falluja tribal council member assassinated Anbar - Voices of Iraq Sunday , 06 /01 /2008 Time 9:35:29 Anbar, Jan 5, (VOI) – Unidentified gunmen assassinated a member of an Iraqi tribal council in the area of Zawbaa, southern Falluja, the spokesman for the Falluja tribal chiefs council said on Saturday. "Unidentified gunmen in a civilian vehicle opened fire on Sheikh Muhammad Abdul-Hadi Yousuf al-Irsan al-Zawbaie near his home in Zawbaa, southern Falluja, killing him instantly," Sheikh Saleh al-Bijari told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). "Zawbaie was a tribal chief in Zawbaa and a member in the Iraqi Tribal Chiefs Council," which was established in 2003, Bijari said. Falluja, the largest city in the predominantly Sunni province of Anbar, lies 45 km west of the Iraqi capital Baghdad. AE/SR U.S. army says Iraqi soldier killed 2 MNF servicemen Baghdad - Voices of Iraq Sunday , 06 /01 /2008 Time 9:35:29 Baghdad, Jan 5, (VOI) – Two U.S. soldiers killed during a combined Iraqi army and Coalition Forces' operation in Ninewa province on Dec. 26 were allegedly shot by an Iraqi soldier, the U.S. army said on Saturday. "For reasons that are as yet unknown, at least one Iraqi army soldier allegedly opened fire killing Capt. Rowdy Inman and Sgt. Benjamin Portell, both of whom were assigned to the 3rd Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment. The incident occurred as U.S. and Iraqi army soldiers were conducting operations to establish a combat outpost. Three other U.S. soldiers and one civilian interpreter were wounded in the attack," according to a U.S. army statement received by the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). "The Iraqi soldier who allegedly opened fire fled the scene but was identified by other Iraqi army personnel and was then apprehended. Two Iraqi army soldiers are now being held in connection with the incident," noted the statement, adding "coalition and Iraqi investigations into the incident are underway." On Friday the commander of the Iraqi army's 2nd Division said that the Iraqi soldier who killed two U.S. soldiers in Mosul 10 days ago was a member of an armed group who infiltrated into a joint Iraqi-U.S. force. "The soldier was part of a joint Iraqi-U.S. patrol undertaking security duty in al-Haramat area, western Mosul, on December 26. When the patrol came under firing attack, the soldier opened fire at U.S. soldiers and killed two of them," Brig. Mutaa Habib al-Khazraji told VOI. "The patrol soldiers managed to arrest him and he is now under the Iraqi side's investigative custody," Khazraji added. The U.S. side denied that this Iraqi soldier opened fire at U.S. servicemen because they sexually harassed an Iraqi girl, affirming that the scene where the incident took place was void of any civilians. On December 28, 2007 the U.S. army had announced that two of its soldiers died of wounds sustained when they came under light arms' fire during military operations in Mosul. AE 2 blasts kill civilian, wounds 3 in Diala Diala - Voices of Iraq Sunday , 06 /01 /2008 Time 9:35:29 Diala, Jan 5, (VOI) – One civilian was killed and three others were wounded in two separate blasts in southern Baaquba city, a local security source said on Saturday. "An improvised explosive device went off on Saturday morning in al-Hay al-Sinaei area in southern Ba'aquba near a gathering of cleaning workers, killing a civilian and injuring another," the source, who requested anonymity, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). "Shortly after the blast, another explosive charge detonated in the same location and wounded two awakening council members," the source noted. The source did not provide further details. The awakening councils are anti-Qaeda fighters working in coordination with the Multi-National Force (MNF) and the Iraqi government. Headed by local chieftains, the councils have been credited with helping reduce violence in many Iraqi provinces, like Anbar, Diala, Ninewa and Salah al-Din. Ba'aquba, the capital city of Diala province, lies 57 km northeast of the Iraqi capital Baghdad. SS 5 Iraqi soldiers killed, 9 suspects captured north of Baghdad Baghdad - Voices of Iraq Sunday , 06 /01 /2008 Time 9:35:29 Baghdad, Jan 5, (VOI) – Joint Iraqi-U.S. forces killed a gunman and captured nine suspects while five Iraqi soldiers were killed and two others wounded in security operations north of Baghdad, the U.S. army said on Saturday. One U.S. soldier was wounded and rushed to Balad hospital, near the clashes scene in the village of Abu Tamr in Samarra, Salah al-Din province," according to a U.S. army statement received by the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). The Iraqi forces identified one of the captured as he was on the list of wanted person for stealing light arms, the statement read. "Five Iraqi soldiers were killed and two others wounded when a house bomb they were trying to defuse exploded," it added. "An arms cache containing four Kalashnikov assault rifles, six Kalashnikov magazines, a PKC machine-gun and a PKC bandolier was found in the same area where the clashes occurred," the U.S. statement read. AE Blast kills six, wounds three in central Iraq Diala - Voices of Iraq Sunday , 06 /01 /2008 Time 9:35:29 Diala, Jan 5, (VOI)- At least six civilians, including two women and a child, were killed and three others wounded on Saturday as a roadside bomb went off near a civilian minibus in central Iraq, a security source said. The incident occurred when "a roadside bomb detonated, this morning, near a minibus on the main road linking Khanaqin to al-Sa'adiyah districts of Diala province," the source, who requested anonymity, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). The source provided no further details. Diala province is 57 km northeast of Baghdad. SK
