Palestine awakes to second day of rare snowfall

Date: 31 / 01 / 2008  Time:  13:50

Bethlehem – Ma'an –

Many Palestinians in the occupied territories woke up to find fields and streets covered with more than twenty centimeters of snow and the sun reflecting off the whiteness.

Snow began to fall on Wednesday evening in areas above 650 meters above sea level.

This time, the expectations of the meteorological departments in Palestine, Jordan, Lebanon and Israel came true. All of them foresaw that the region would come under the influence of low pressure accompanied by an arctic air mass.

The Palestinian Meteorological Department expects the low pressure and the arctic air to persist until Thursday afternoon, resulting cold and sometimes rainy weather, with a chance of more snow at high altitudes.

Winds will be northwesterly and moderate. The influence of the arctic air mass will begin to decrease gradually, yet the weather will remain cold and partly cloudy. Ice crystals are expected at night and in the early morning hours.

On Friday, temperatures are expected to rise gradually and the weather will remain partly cloudy with a chance of showers in the north and center. Winds will be southwesterly and moderate.

Expected temperatures during the coming 24 hours are as follows (°C):

Jerusalem: -2 to 4

Bethlehem: -1 to 3

Ramallah: -1 to 3

Tulkarem: 6 to 13

Qalqilia: 6 to 13

Salfit: 0 to 5

Nablus: 0 to 6

Jenin: 4 to 10

Tubas: 4 to 10

Hebron: 1 to 3

Jericho: 6 to 14

Gaza City: 7 to 15

Khan Younis: 7 to 15

Rafah: 6 to 16
