48 Iraqis Killed in Various War Attacks, According to January 24, 2008 News Reports

Aljazeera tv reported at 3:25 pm, ET, that 36 people were killed in the Ninewa explosion. It added that the Nenawa police chief was killed together with two of his body guards, in an attack (See details below).

Yaqen.net news agency reported an attack with a roadside bomb on a US forces patrol, destroying a US military vehicle, near Al-Ghadeer bridge, east of Baghdad.

Yaqen.net also reported that a US military vehicle, Humvee, was destroyed in a Samarra roadside bomb.

14 killed, 134 wounded in Wednesday's explosion in Mosul-Governor

Mosul, Jan 24, (VOI)-

Ninewa Province Governor said, late on Wednesday, that the casualties from Wednesday's explosion in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul reached 14 dead and 134 wounded, calling to announce Mosul as "affected city". 

"The death toll of the explosion that took place on Wednesday afternoon in Zinjily area, central Mosul, has risen to 14 dead and 134 wounded," Duraid Kashmoulah told Aswat al-Iraq –Voices of Iraq- (VOI).

The Governor called upon the Iraqi Prime Minster Nouri al-Maliki to announce Mosul as an "affected area".

Meanwhile, Brigadier Mutaa al-Khazraji, Iraqi Army's 2nd Division Commander, said that an officer was among the dead and seven soldiers were wounded in the explosion.
The Iraqi government decided to send a high-ranking security team to Mosul to assess the effects of yesterday's explosion.

On Wednesday, Head of the Operation Room in Ninewa police command, Brig. Abel Karim al-Juburi, told VOI that a blast resulting from a large amount of explosives planted in a building on Pepsi street located in Zinjily district left 50 casualties, mostly civilian women and children.

Mosul, capital city of Ninewa province, is 402 km north of Baghdad.

3 gunmen killed, 2 arrested in Delou'iya

The government-backed-Delou'iya awakening council said it killed three gunmen and arrested two others in armed clashes east of district on Thursday.
“Gunmen on Thursday targeted a patrol of Delou'iya awakening council in al-Mashru’a village, east of Delou'iya, leaving four of the council members wounded”, Hameed al-Ahmed, the chief of Delou'iya awakening council, told Aswat al-Iraq-Voices of Iraq (VOI).
He added “the awakening council fighters and police forces, backed by U.S. helicopters, conducted a blitz in the accident site, clashing with the gunmen”.
The tribal official pointed out “three gunmen were killed and two others arrested”.
Delou'iya, of Salah al-Din province, lies 100 km north of Baghdad .

Three unknown bodies found in Baghdad

Baghdad, Jan 24, (VOI)-

Iraqi police patrols found on Thursday three unidentified bodies dumped in different parts of the Iraqi capital Baghdad, an interior ministry source said.

"Police patrols found three unknown corpses dumped in various parts of Baghdad," the source, who requested anonymity, told Aswat al-Iraq -Voices of Iraq - (VOI).

The source added "two bodies were found in Baghdad's southern neighborhood of al-Doura while the third body was found in al-Aamel quarter, western Baghdad."
"The bodies found bore signs of gunshot wounds to different parts of the body, mainly to the head," he noted.

Khalidiya police allege killing a suicide bomber in Anbar

Anbar, Jan 24, (VOI)-

Police forces killed an alleged suicide bomber trying to blow up himself outside the police station in Khalidiya town of Anbar province on Thursday, a security source said.
Khalidiya police forces killed a suicide bomber while trying to blow himself up outside a Khalidiya police station”, a source from Khalidiya police told Aswat al-Iraq-Voices of Iraq(VOI) on the condition of anonymity.

He added “the attacker was denied access to approach the police station and as he did not obey orders to stop the forces shot him dead outright”.

The source noted “explosives were found strapped to the body of the alleged suicide bomber after it was searched."

The source did not provide details about the targeted police stations, but said the suicide bomber was not a Khalidiya local.

Khalidiya town of Anbar province lies 80 km west of Baghdad.

Central Baghdad explosion kills 2 policemen, wounds 3

Baghdad, Jan 24, (VOI) – Two police personnel were killed and three others wounded in a blast that ripped through central Baghdad, Iraqi police said on Thursday.
"An explosive device planted by unknown individuals on a main road in Karada neighborhood detonated on Thursday noon while an Iraqi police patrol was passing the location," a security source, who preferred to remain unnamed, told Aswat al-Iraq, Voices of Iraq, (VOI).

"The explosion killed two policemen, wounded three others and caused damage to a patrol vehicle," the source indicated.
"Security forces sealed off the scene of the blast and took the wounded to a nearby hospital for treatment," it added.

Chief of Ninewa police dies of wounds

Mosul, Jan 24, (VOI)-

The chief of Ninewa police department died on Thursday of wounds he sustained in the suicide bombing attack which targeted him in western Mosul, a senior army officer said.

"A suicide bomber blew up an explosive belt strapped to his body on Thursday morning near Brigadier Saleh Hassan while inspecting the scene of Wednesday's attack in a building in al-Pepsi Street in Zinjily area in western Mosul," General Ryad Jalal Tawfiq, commander of the Ninewa operations, told Aswat al-Iraq - Voices of Iraq - (VOI).

A police source had earlier said that the chief of the Ninewa police department survived an attempt on his life on Thursday in western Mosul.

"The attack injured him as well as one of his bodyguards," he noted.
Governor of Ninewa province Duraid Kashmoulah imposed a curfew on the province as of 12 pm on Thursday until further notice after the explosion that jolted the city of Mosul, which left 15 dead and 141 wounded.

The governor had said, late on Wednesday, that the casualties from Wednesday's explosion in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul reached 14 dead and 134 wounded, calling to announce Mosul as an "affected city."

Mosul, capital city of Ninewa province, is 405 km north of Baghdad.
