2 US Soldiers, 42 Iraqis Killed in War Attacks, Including 13 Executed by Death Squads, According to February 25, 2008 News Reports

Yaqen.net reported the following news today:

- 8 US-backed Iraqi soldiers were killed in Buhruz, near Ba'aqouba.

- An Iraqi contractor and at least two guards were killed in Al-Rashad area in Kirkuk.

- A katyousha rocked hit a US Hummer vehicle inside Al-Habbaniya joint base, destroying it and causing its ammunition to explodes.

- 7 Iraqis were killed, including a policeman, in Mosul.

- Brigadir General Mattar was killed by a handicapped suicide bomber attacking police headquarters in Samarra.

- A woman was killed by gunmen on motorbikes in Basra.

- Romanian forces base in Al-Nasseriya were attacked with six rockets.

The Iraq news agency (INA) reported the death of an Israeli soldier in Baghdad last week. The soldier's name is Ami Hai Baiton and he joined the US forces there.

Two U.S. soldiers killed in Baghdad-army   Baghdad - Voices of Iraq

Baghdad, Feb 25, (VOI)-

The U.S. army, late on Sunday, said two service members were killed in two separate attacks in the Iraqi capital. 

"A Multi-National Division – Baghdad Soldier was killed when an improvised explosive device struck the Soldier’s vehicle during a combat patrol in northern Baghdad Feb. 24.," the U.S. army said in a statement received by Aswat al-Iraq- Voices of Iraq- (VOI).

In another press release, the U.S. army admitted the killing of a second soldier by small-arms fire during combat operations in southern Baghdad Feb. 24."

The deaths bring the number of the U.S. troops killed in Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion in March 2003 to 3,972 according to statistics released by the U.S. army. Of this number, 28 U.S. soldiers have been killed so far in January 2008. SK

Mass grave of women found in Diala

A mass grave containing eight unidentified women was found in al-Khalis district, Diala, on Monday, a security source said. "The mass grave was found in the Harujah village, al-Khalis district, 15 km south of Ba'aquba," the source, who requested anonymity, told Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq – (VOI). Ba'aquba, the capital of Diala, lies 57 km north of Baghdad. AE

Three unidentified bodies found in Baghdad

Iraqi police patrols found on Monday three unidentified bodies dumped in different parts of the Iraqi capital Baghdad, an interior ministry source said. "Police patrols found three unknown corpses dumped in various parts of Baghdad," the source, who asked to remain unnamed, told Aswat al-Iraq - Voices of Iraq - (VOI).

The source added "two bodies were found in al-Ubeidi and al-Za'afaraniya neighborhoods in Baghdad's eastern side of Rasafa, while the third body was found in al-Aamel neighborhood, western Baghdad." "The bodies bore signs of gunshot wounds to different parts of the body, mainly to the head," he noted. SH/SR  

Kidnapped engineer's body found in Basra

    Basra, Feb 25, (VOI) –

The body of an abducted engineer, who had disappeared a month ago, was found in Basra's hospital morgue, a security source said on Monday. "The family of engineer Ali Mahmoud found his corpse in Basra's hospital morgue a month after being kidnapped by an armed group," a security source, who preferred not to be named, told Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq – (VOI).

"Mahmoud was working as an engineer at the Basra airport and was abducted near the airport's residential compound a month ago by an armed group." An eyewitness and a relative of the killed engineer said "the database information of the morgue indicated the body was found in Hamdan industrial area."

"They were unable to identify the body since it did not bear any personal identification card," he said. Earlier, a security source told VOI that gunmen kidnapped an engineer at the Basra airport residential compound, north of Basra. Basra, the second largest Iraqi province and home to the country's key oil facilities, lies 590 km south of Baghdad. AM/AE

Central Baghdad's mayor survives kidnapping

    Baghdad, Feb 25, (VOI) -

The mayor of al-Aazamiya, central Baghdad, on Monday escaped a kidnapping by unknown gunmen in al-Kazemiya neighborhood in northern Baghdad because local residents saved him.

Hussein al-Juburi told Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq - (VOI) over the phone "Unidentified gunmen stopped his car after leaving a funeral in al-Kazemiya neighborhood in northern Baghdad, forced him to exit his car, and disarmed his bodyguards."

"I tried to escape but they caught me, but some persons arrived from the funeral and saved my life along with two of my bodyguards," the mayor added. "A police vehicle patrol was near the scene and did not interfere to prevent the kidnapping," he underlined. SH/SR

3 gunmen killed, 362 suspects detained during last week

    Baghdad, Feb 25, (VOI) -

Iraqi security forces killed three gunmen, detained 362 wanted men and suspected gunmen and freed 18 captives in separate areas of the capital Baghdad under the Fardh al-Qanoon security plan during the last week, an official source said on Monday.

"Security forces killed three gunmen, detained 182 wanted men and 180 suspected gunmen, freed 18 captives and defused three car bombs and 173 explosive charges in separate areas of Baghdad over the past seven days," Maj. General Qassem Atta, the official spokesman for Fardh al-Qanoon, said during a press conference held in Baghdad.   SH/SR  

3 civilians killed in attacks in Diala

    Diala, Feb 25, (VOI) – Three people, including a woman, were killed on Monday in two separate attacks in the province of Diala, a security source said. "Unidentified gunmen killed two persons near a garage in central Ba'aquba," the source, who declined to reveal his name, told Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq – (VOI).

"Another armed group killed a woman in the village of al-Kawathir, Buhrez district, (5 km) south of Baaquba," the source added. Baaquba, the capital of Diala, lies 57 km north of Baghdad. AE  

Blast kills three, wounds 11 in southern Baghdad

    Baghdad, Feb 25, (VOI)-

At least three people were killed and 11 others wounded on Monday as roadside bomb exploded in southern Baghdad, the spokesman for the Baghdad security plan said. "An explosive charge detonated, this morning, in al-Za'afaraniya, killing three civilians and wounding 11 more," Brigadier Qassem Ata told Aswat al-Iraq- Voices of Iraq- (VOI). The spokesman gave no further details. SK

Mosul explosion kills, wounds 7 family members

Ninewa, Feb 25, (VOI) –

Seven members of one family were killed or wounded in a blast that ripped through their house in western Mosul, an official security source said on Monday.

"An unknown object fell on a house in Tal al-Rumman area, western Mosul, killing three civilians, including a child and wounding four women of one family," the source, who preferred to remain unnamed, told Aswat al-Iraq, Voices of Iraq, (VOI). The reasons behind the blast remain unknown, the source explained, adding that the explosion caused huge damage to the house. The wounded were taken to a nearby hospital and the bodies to the morgue, according to the same source. Mosul, the capital city of Ninewa province, lies 405 km north of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.   SS
