International organization expresses deep regret at UN Security Council failure on Gaza

The Coordinating Bureau of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), expressed their "deep regret" on Friday for the failure of the UN Security Council to address the crisis in the Gaza Strip (due to the US shielding of Israeli occupation government practices).

In a press statement, NAM warned that the Security Council's inability to address the crisis could affect its ability to inspire confidence and credibility. At the same time NAM thanked the majority of the members of the Security Council, including those in the NAM caucus, for their efforts to put an end to the crisis.

The UN Security Council met on Friday 25 January 2008 to address the siege of the Gaza Strip by Israel. The current chair of the Security Council, Libya, blocked the statement calling for the lifting of the siege on the grounds that the statement made no condemnation of Israel's policy of "collective punishment".

Furthermore, NAM called upon the Israeli government to put an end to its "ongoing illegal […] practices" in all occupied territories of the West Bank and Gaza. The proposal by the Palestinian Authority to assume control of the Palestinian side of the Gaza Strip's borders was greeted as a satisfactory solution to the current crisis.

Finally, NAM emphasized its commitment towards alleviating the Palestinian people of their present hardships and supporting their human rights issues.

NAM is an international organization currently including 118 member states (These are basically the Third World countries).
