Afghanistan News.Net
Friday 22nd August, 2008 (IANS)

Three Canadian soldiers were killed and another was wounded in a roadside bombing in south Afghanistan, officials said Friday.

The soldiers, serving under the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), were in a vehicle when it was struck Wednesday by a bomb in Zherai district of Kandahar province, the Canadian military said.

'All four soldiers were evacuated to Kandahar airfield,' Brigadier General Denis Thompson, a Canadian military commander, told reporters at the base. 'Sadly, three of the soldiers were confirmed dead by medical authorities.'

The injured soldier was reported to be in serious but stable condition, he said.

The ISAF in Kabul also confirmed the deaths of its soldiers in a statement issued Friday.

Three Polish soldiers in the ISAF were killed in a similar roadside attack Wednesday in the east-central province of Ghazni while a day earlier 10 French soldiers were killed in a Taliban ambush east of Kabul.

30 alleged Taliban fighters killed in Afghan battle 3 Polish soldiers died in roadside blast

Ap, Kabul, August 22, 2008

US-led coalition troops killed more than 30 (alleged Taliban fighters) in a battle in eastern Afghanistan while three Polish soldiers serving with Nato forces died in a roadside blast elsewhere, officials said yesterday.

Afghanistan is experiencing a surge in (Taliban resistance to the NATO occupation forces) despite Western efforts to stabilize the country.

On Thursday, the coalition described how a search operation by its troops and Afghan commandos in the eastern province of Laghman took a bloody turn.

(alleged Taliban fighters) engaged the troops in a battle Wednesday until a coalition airstrike destroyed their fighting position, a coalition statement said.

It said 200 civilians fled the area before the airstrike. More than 30 (alleged Taliban fighters) were killed and one of them was wounded and taken for treatment after the clash, it said.

The three Polish soldiers died Wednesday when a roadside bomb exploded in the central province of Ghazni, said Polish Defence Ministry spokesman Jacek Poplawski. A fourth soldier was wounded in the blast.

Warnings from Western commanders in Afghanistan that (Taliban fighters) attacks are growing larger and more sophisticated were borne out Tuesday when a huge Taliban force killed the 10 French paratroopers in a mountain gorge.

It was the deadliest ground attack by insurgents on foreign troops in the country since the US invasion in 2001.

Sarkozy flew to Kabul on Wednesday to pledge continued support for a war which has become bloodier and more difficult each year since the Taliban's ouster.
