16 Iraqis Killed in War Attacks, 17 Former Iraqi Pilots Kidnapped and Transferred to Iran, 32 Anti-Iranian Sheiks Killed, According to April 5, 2008 News Reports

The Iraq News Agency (INA) reported today that US-recruited Sahwa fighters kill Iraqis released from US prisons.

- Pro-government Shi'i militias kidnapped 17 former Iraqi pilots, who served during the Iran-Iraq war, and transferred them to Iran. These militias also killed 32 tribal chiefs, who were perceived as ant-Iranian influence in Iraq.

- On April 13, an international conference about security in Iraq will be convened in Damascus. The highlight of the conference is a trilateral meeting between Syria, Iranian, and US officials to coordinate their efforts in Iraq.


Gunman killed in Basra

Basra, Apr 5, (VOI) –

The Multi-National Force killed a gunman in an air attack in Basra, southern Iraq, within efforts “to back Iraqi security forces,” the MNF said on Saturday.

“MNF troops, receiving information from the Iraqi forces on shooting activities by gunmen in a building in the area of al-Hayaniya in Basra, killed one gunman on Friday,” according to an MNF statement received by Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq – (VOI).

“A reconnaissance drone verified and killed the target gunman,” according to the statement.
An official security source in Basra had told VOI on Thursday that three civilians, including one woman, were killed and six others wounded in an air attack by a warplane that could not be identified in western Basra.

Gunmen kill 4 cops in Diala

Four policemen were killed and one civilian wounded when gunmen attacked a police patrol in Khanqeen, northern Baghdad, on Saturday a Diala police source said.

"An armed group attacked a police patrol on the main road of Nafitkhana district located in Khanqeen town, 155 km north-east of Baaquba," a source in the joint coordination center (JCC), who requested anonymity, told Aswat al-Iraq - Voices of Iraq - (VOI).

He noted "the gunmen showered the patrol with bullets, leaving four policemen killed and a civilian who was passing the location wounded."

The source did not provide further details on the accident.
Baaquba, the capital city of Diala province, lies 57 km north-east Baghdad.

Gunmen assassinate police officer

A police officer in the rank of brigadier was assassinated by unidentified gunmen in eastern Baghdad, a security source in the Iraqi interior ministry said on Saturday.

“Unknown gunmen opened a volley of fire at Brig. Saadi Razouqi while he was driving his private vehicle on the Muhammad al-Qassem highway, off the eastern Baghdad district of Zayouna,” the source, who did not want to have his name mentioned, told Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq – (VOI).
“The gunmen then escaped to an unknown place,” the source said, giving no further details.

4 headless bodies found in Diala

Four headless bodies of policemen who had been kidnapped by unidentified gunmen earlier on Saturday were found in Khanaqin district, northeastern Diala, a security official said.

“The Iraqi police found on Saturday four headless bodies of policemen belonging to an oil company protection force. The bodies were found on the Khanaqin-Naftkhana main road, (100 km) northeast of Baaquba,” Sarjal Abdul-Kareem, the spokesman for the Border Guard force in Diala province, told Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq – (VOI).

He did not give more information.
Baaquba, the capital city of Diala, lies 57 km northeast of Baghdad.

Gunmen kill Christian cleric in central Baghdad

Unknown gunmen on Saturday shot dead a Christian cleric outside his house in central Baghdad, a police source said.

“Gunmen in a civilian car attacked and killed Yousif Adel, a priest at Mar Poutrus Church, this morning while leaving his house in al-Sina'a street in central Baghdad,” the source, who asked not to be named, told Aswat al-Iraq- Voices of Iraq- (VOI).

The source gave no further details.

Bomb blast kills 3, wounds 15 in eastern Baghdad

Baghdad, Apr 5, (VOI)-

At least three civilians were killed and 15 others wounded on Saturday when a roadside bomb exploded near a bus in eastern Baghdad, a security source said. 

“An explosive charge exploded, this morning, near a bus in Beirut square, killing three civilians and wounding 15,” the source, who requested anonymity, told Aswat al-Iraq- Voices of Iraq- (VOI).
The source provided no further details.

10 killed, 18 wounded in Iraq violence

Arbil, Apr 5, (VOI) –

Ten people were killed and 18 others wounded in acts of violence in different areas in Iraq from 9:30 p.m. on Friday to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, security sources said. 

In Baghdad, an Iraqi police source said unidentified gunmen killed a Christian clergyman while stepping out of his home in central Baghdad, while another security source said three civilians were killed and 15 others wounded when an improvised explosive device (IED) went off near a passenger bus in eastern Baghdad.

In Samarra, Salah al-Din province, the Multi-National Force (MNF) said that two gunmen were killed in a military operation that targeted members of al-Qaeda organization east of Samarra.

In Mosul, unidentified gunmen attacked the headquarters of Iraqi Kurdistan Region President Massoud Barazani’s Kurdistan Democratic Party, a KDP member said.

A police source in the Kirkuk command said an IED went off on Friday evening near a police patrol in central Kirkuk, wounding three patrol men.

In Diala, 57 km northeast of the Iraqi capital, a border guard force spokesman told Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq – (VOI) that four headless bodies of policemen kidnapped by unidentified gunmen earlier on Saturday were found in the district of Khanaqin, Diala province.
