Most Americans believe country on wrong track

WASHINGTON, April 4 (Xinhua) --

Most Americans believe their country is on the wrong track, the highest level since the early 1990s, according to a poll published on Friday.

The poll conducted by the CBS News and the New York Times found that 81 percent of the 1,368 Americans surveyed said they believed "things have pretty seriously gotten off on the wrong track," compared to 69 percent in 2007 and 35 percent in early 2002.

A majority of nearly every demographic and political group, including Democrats and Republicans, men and women, residents of cities and rural areas, college graduates and those who only finished high school, believed the country is moving forward in the wrong direction, the poll showed.

It also found about 78 percent said that the country is even worse than five years ago when the Iraq war started.

The poll came as the country is suffering from crises on housing, economy and international image. Forty percent of respondents in the poll said that regulators should be mostly to blame, while 28 percent named government leaders.
