Carter, the Brave, Continues to Speak Out Criticizing Apartheid Israelis and their Supporters Carter: Hamas won the 2006 elections fair and square [ 29/04/2008 - 11:26 AM ] WASHINGTON, (PIC)-- Former US president Jimmy Carter stated Monday that Hamas won the 2006 elections "fair and square" because the elections, which he monitored then, were free, fair, just, and transparent, deploring the American administration and Israel for their unjust policies toward Hamas as a result of its democratic victory. In an interview with the NBC TV channel, Carter highlighted at the beginning of his talk that, "there's no way to have peace in the Middle East without bringing the Palestinians back together. And Hamas represents at least half of the Palestinian people." Carter elaborated that the US insisted on having elections in Palestine and Israel went along with it, and no one objected when Hamas candidates were on the ballot, but after Hamas won the elections fair and square and got a majority of the parliamentary seats, US and Israel declared Hamas unfairly a "terrorist organization" and refused to negotiate with it. The former US president also underlined that the American attempts to undermine Hamas are counterproductive.
