400 civilians killed, 1720 wounded in Sadr City in 3 weeks

Baghdad - Voices of Iraq
Wednesday , 23 /04 /2008  Time 10:13:38

Baghdad, Apr 23, (VOI)-

At least 400 civilians were killed and 1720 others, including women and children, were wounded in the armed confrontations and bombarding operations that took place in Sadr city over the last three weeks, Falah Shenshel, lawmaker, said on Wednesday.

"The city's residents live in tough humanitarian condition because of the blockade imposed by U.S. and Iraqi forces three weeks ago," Shenshel told Aswat al-Iraq - Voices of Iraq (VOI) by phone.
Sadr city has witnessed armed clashes between Iraqi-U.S. forces that have surrounded the city for three weeks, and the Sadr movement's Mahdi Army fighters, as the city is considered one of their most important strongholds in Baghdad.

Meanwhile, the Sadrist legislator said that "a parliamentary delegation arrived today in Sadr City to review the humanitarian conditions in it and will present a report to the parliament within this respect to demand the lifting of the blockade."

The Sadrist bloc has 30 seats out of the 275-seat parliament.
Armed confrontations have flared up late last month in Basra, Iraq's second largest city and oil hub, between government forces and Sadr's militias. The clashes coincided with angry upheavals in Sadr City and several southern provinces, where Sadr supporters spread.

The clashes broke out hours after Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki declared a plan codenamed Saulat al-Forsan (Knights' Assault), which he said targeted the elimination of armed groups in Basra, 590 km south of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.
