killed in Sadr City – U.S. army U.S. soldiers on Tuesday killed five gunmen in
Sadr City, eastern Baghdad, the site of intense fighting between
security forces and gunmen for weeks now, the U.S. army in Iraq said. The predominantly Shi'i Sadr City, a strategic stronghold of followers of Shiite leader Muqtada al-Sadr's Mahdi Army, has been witnessing fierce clashes between joint Iraqi-U.S. forces and gunmen believed to belong to Sadr's militias. Stover said, "At approximately 10 p.m., Soldiers from 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, conducting a route-clearing mission were struck with an improvised explosive device. Soldiers were then attacked with small-arms by criminals in the area." "Soldiers returned fire and killed three
criminals," Stover said. Shi'i mosques in Sadr City recited via the microphones the text of a statement issued by Sadr in which he threatened an "open war" if the government did not stop targeting members of the Sadrist bloc and if U.S. forces did not lift the blockade on the city and get out. Armed confrontations have flared up late last month in Basra, Iraq's second largest city and oil hub, between government forces and Sadr's militias. The clashes coincided with angry upheavals in several southern provinces, where Sadr supporters spread. The clashes broke out hours after Iraqi Prime
Minister Nouri al-Maliki declared a plan codenamed Saulat al-Forsan
(Knights' Assault), which he said targeted the elimination of armed
groups in Basra, 590 km south of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.
