33 Afghanis Killed in War Attacks, Including 24 by NATO Occupation Forces Over 20 Taliban insurgents killed in S Afghanistan www.chinaview.cn 2008-04-12 16:20:20 KABUL, April 12 (Xinhua) -- Afghan and international (NATO) troops on Friday launched a joint military operation in southern Afghan province of Zabul leaving at least 24 Taliban (fighters) dead and eight others injured, said an official on Saturday. Gulab Shah Alikhil, the deputy governor of Zabul province told Xinhua that the combined troops carried out an clean up operation in Sarkhagan area, outskirt of the Qalat district, where they engaged with Taliban (fighters resisting NATO foreign forces occupying their country) then called in air support. "There were not casualties on Afghan and international troops," Alikhil said. Taliban have yet to make any comment. Conflicts and Taliban-related violence have left more than 380 people dead so far this year in Afghanistan, where Taliban (fighters) recently have vowed to launch the "Spring offensive" to intensify their guerrilla-style attacks on national army and foreign troops. Editor: An Lu Taliban claim responsibility for suicide attack in Southern Afghanistan www.chinaview.cn 2008-04-10 19:09:18 KABUL, April 10 (Xinhua) -- Qari Yusuf Ahmadi, the purported Taliban spokesman, claimed responsibility for the suicide attack in southern Afghanistan's Kandahar city on Thursday, which killed at least eight civilians and wounded over 26 others. Ahmadi told Xinhua via phone from an unknown hideout that a suicide bomber named Ahmadullah Khan from Kandahar city carried out that attack targeting NATO forces. The attack left six soldiers dead and two vehicles destroyed. Sayed Aqa Saqib, the police chief of Kandahar province, told Xinhua that the (attack) occurred in the downtown of Kandahar city at around 10 a.m. (0530GMT) as a suicide attacker drove car laden with explosives and exploded himself while getting close to the NATO convoy. "Eight civilians including two children were killed and 26 others including two policemen were injured," Saqib said," over 14shops along the street hit by explosion were damaged." However, he said there were no casualties on NATO troops.
