Voice of Palestine, Canada, Rebroadcasts Interview with Israel Shahak On 20th Anniversary

Voice of Palestine Marks 20th Anniversary

Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2007, 8 - 9 pm 102.7 FM

This week is the 20th anniversary of Voice of Palestine, Vancouver, Canada, going on the air at Coop Radio. The last 20 years have seen many changes for the show, going from a half-hour to one hour, introducing new sections like Focus on Zionism, setting up a website with all our shows available for download, and interviewing many diverse analysts and scholars.

This week, on our show on Tuesday, September 4th, we will repeat one of our most memorable interviews with the late Israel Shahak, from November 16, 1993. Professor Shahak was one of the vanguard Israelis to champion Palestinian rights and was a visionary on many levels. In the interview, which was about Israel's global role, we also talked about the Oslo process. Even then, just two months after the signing, Prof. Shahak correctly noted that Israel intended to reduce the PLO to the "village league", a fact painfully obvious today to all but Mahmoud Abbas and his supporters who refuse to acknowledge reality after fourteen years or perhaps are grateful to Israel for their collaborationist role. Professor Shahak also predicted the downfall of Yitzhak Rabin and his labour government.

During the last 20 years, there have been many changes in the Palestinian arena, both under occupation and in diaspora. At Voice of Palestine, we lost our founding operator and long-time comrade, Patrick Newton, in November 2004, and we are happy to report that we are continuing with the scholarship in his memory at Bir Zeit (four scholarships have already been raised). It was recently renamed to the Patrick Newton/James Graff Memorial Scholarship to honour the late Jim Graff who helped set up the project and was also a champion of Palestinian human and national rights http://www.voiceofpalestine.ca/PatNewtonMemorialScholarship.php  .

So tune in this Tuesday and every Tuesday from 8 - 9 pm PDT (Wednesday morning 6:00 - 7:00 am Palestine time) for news and analysis about the Palestinian struggle, as every year that passes seems to make it even more imperative that we keep Palestinian voices alive. Voice of Palestine www.voiceofpalestine.ca  broadcasts weekly on Vancouver Cooperative Radio (CFRO) 102.7 FM, Vancouver. People outside of Vancouver can listen to the show live on the internet http://www.coopradio.org/listen/
