Abbas Zaki visits Nahr al-Bared

Date: 30 / 09 / 2007 Time: 11:58

Lebanon – Ma'an –

Representative of the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) in Lebanon Abbas Zaki on Sunday visited war torn Nahr al-Bared refugee camp.

It was the first official visit since the cessation of the clashes between Fateh al-Islam and the Lebanese army.

Other PLO leaders accompanied Zaki, in addition to Palestinian Ambassador and Head of the Committee for Lebanese-Palestinian Dialogue Khalil Makkawi.

Dozens of journalists were also present.

Zaki said that the refugee camp triumphed rather than capitulated.

He appealed to all those who declare war on terrorism to rebuild the refugee camp.

"The world has to realise that neither Lebanon, nor the Palestinians, can rebuild this camp," said Zaki, "and those who frequently declare war on terrorism should participate immediately in rebuilding the camp.

"Furthermore, all those who deal with the Palestinian issue and have failed to force Israel to comply with international legitimate resolutions, must make efforts to support the Palestinians in Lebanon who are no more than guests under the sovereignty of law."

Approximately 31,000 residents of Nahr al-Bared refugee camp fled during the first few weeks of the confrontations. The majority sought refuge in the neighbouring Al-Baddawi refugee camp.
