U.S. army says waged air strike in southern Baghdad's al-Dora

Baghdad - Voices of Iraq Saturday , 29 /09 /2007 Time 5:51:09

Baghdad, Sept 29, (VOI) –

The U.S. army said it waged an air strike on the neighborhood of al-Dora, southern Baghdad, on Friday to target gunmen who were " firing mortars at coalition and Iraqi forces."

The Iraqi police had said on Friday that at least eight civilians were killed and seven others wounded as a result of U.S. helicopters' fire on a residential area in al-Dora during the early hours of the day after clashes between a U.S. patrol and gunmen. A U.S. army statement, however, argued that the coalition forces had no reports proving the raid in al-Dora targeted civilians. "On the evening of September 27, coalition forces surveillance elements observed a group of men setting up and firing mortars in Dora. After they fired the mortars, the men hid the mortar tube nearby. The criminals were also observed firing their weapons toward their neighbors to the north earlier in the evening. Responding to this hostile action, Coalition forces called for air support and engaged the terrorists," according to a U.S. army statement received by the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). The U.S. statement did not set a number of the gunmen.

He then worked for several local newspapers in Mosul, 405 km north of Baghdad. Mosul, the capital of Ninewa province, has been witnessing escalated armed operations since the beginning of the fasting month of Ramadan. The governor of Ninewa has recently warned that the al-Qaeda Organization was taking positions in Mosul after escaping the provinces of al-Anbar and Diala. Some 230 Iraqi journalists were killed until June 2007 directly or indirectly since the Iraq war broke out in 2003.

By KIM CURTIS Associated Press Writer

Sep 29, 2007, 9:57 AM EDT

BAGHDAD (AP) --

Iraq (war attacks) claimed 18 more lives on Saturday, including six people killed when a suicide truck bomber detonated his explosive payload near a Humvee filled with Iraqi soldiers, officials said.

A military panel, meanwhile, sentenced an Army sniper to five months in prison, a reduction in rank and forfeiture of pay for planting evidence in connection with the deaths of two Iraqi civilians.

Spc. Jorge G. Sandoval, 22, was acquitted of murder charges in the April and May deaths of two unidentified men. The panel decided he was guilty of a lesser charges of placing detonation wire on one of the bodies to make it look as if the man was an insurgent.

On Saturday, Iraqi soldiers acting on a tip tried to intercept the suicide driver as his pickup truck headed toward Mosul, 225 miles northwest of Baghdad. As the Iraqi Humvee neared the truck, the driver detonated his explosive payload, according to the officer who spoke on the condition of anonymity for fear of reprisal. Three soldiers and three civilians were killed, the official said.

Late Friday, police officials said Iraqi Interior Ministry commandos handed over nine decomposing bodies to a hospital in Samarra, 60 miles north of Baghdad. The officials requested anonymity because they were not authorized to release the information.
