The Iraq News Agency (INA) reported that two car bombs exploded today in Al-Baya'a neighborhood, southwest of Baghdad, killing 32 people and injuring 28. VOI reported only 6 deaths below.

75 al-Qaeda fighters killed, 40 arrested in Diala

Diala, Sept 26, (VOI)- 

Iraqi and U.S. forces killed 75 alleged al-Qaeda fighters and arrested 40 others in a series of military operations in Muqdadiya of Diala province, central Iraq, Diala operation commander said on Wednesday. "Iraqi army and police forces, backed by U.S. troops, launched a string of military operation in Muqdadiya district ongoing for five days now, killing 75 al-Qaeda fighters and arresting 40," General Abdul Karim al-Rubaie told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). The Iraqi commander said that the forces also confiscated 67 bombs during the operation. Muqdadiya is one of the main strongholds of Qaeda organization in Diala province, 57 km northeast of Baghdad.

Police forces kill two gunmen in Falluja

Falluja, Sept 26, (VOI) - 

Police forces killed two militants wearing explosive belts in Falluja, while 16 suspected gunmen were arrested in crackdown near the city, a police source said on Wednesday. "Police forces killed two al-Qaeda fighters in Nazzal neighborhood, central Falluja," the source told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). The source added "the forces raided the house where the two militants were hiding and killed them." "The militants were found to have been wearing explosive belts," he noted. Meanwhile, the same source said that 16 persons, believed to be al-Qaeda fighters, were arrested in a crackdown in Albo Shijil village near Falluja. "The operation was based on intelligence indicated that the gunmen were launching attacks against police forces and civilians," the source concluded. Falluja city is 45 km west of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.

Ten casualties as charge explodes near mosque in Basra

Basra, Sept 26, (VOI)- 

At least five people were killed and five more wounded on Wednesday evening as a bomb exploded near a mosque in the southern Iraqi city of Basra, a medical source and eyewitnesses said. "Basra Teaching Hospital admitted five bodies and five wounded people this evening as an explosive charge went off in Hamdan area in south of Basra," a medical source told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). Meanwhile, an eyewitness told VOI that the bomb exploded near al-Hathlol mosque in Hamdan area, on Wednesday evening, leaving 13 casualties. "The casualties were taken to more than one hospital in Basra, another witness said. Basra, a predominantly Shiite city, is 590 km south of Baghdad. SK/SR

Bombing kills six, wounds 30 in Baghdad

Baghdad, Sept 26, (VOI)- 

At least six civilians were killed and over 30 wounded on Wednesday evening as a car bomb exploded in southern Baghdad, eyewitnesses said. "A car bomb detonated, this evening, in Shari Ashrin in al-Baya'a, southern Baghdad, killing and wounding an unidentified number of people," an eyewitness told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). The same witness added "the explosion also damaged some nearby commercial shops and houses." Another eyewitness said "two car bombs detonated simultaneously in the area, killing six people and wounding over 30." Iraqi police could not be immediately reached to comment on the incident. SK/SR

50 casualties as truck bomb explodes in Mosul

Mosul, Sept 26, (VOI)- 

At least three people were killed and 47 wounded on Wednesday when a truck crammed with explosives detonated near a court building under construction in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, a police source said.

"The death toll of the blast that took place, today afternoon, in al-Dhubbat neighborhood, was three dead and 47 wounded," Brigadier Abdul Karim al-Juburi told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). The source said "among the casualties were construction workers as the attack seemingly targeted a court building under construction." "The nearby houses also severely damaged in the explosion," Brigadier al-Juburi added. Mosul is 405 km north of Baghdad. SK

Police officer shot down by sniper in Basra

Basra, Sept 26, (VOI) – 

A captain from Basra police was shot down by a sniper in the center of the city, a local official security source said on Wednesday.

"Captain Ahmed Hashim from Basra police was killed by a sniper on Wednesday at noon in al-Shamshoumiya neighborhood in central Basra," the source, who requested his name not be mentioned, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). "He was killed by a shot to the head," the source explained. No further information was given by the source about the incident. Two Basra police officers survived attempts on their lives in two separate incidents last week. Lieutenant Colonel Majid Shanan from Basra Intelligence was wounded by a sniper's bullet in al-Shamshoumiya last Wednesday, while Brigadier Nouri Jaafar Fayyad, the police chief of the city, received a shot to the shoulder last Friday. The mainly Shiite city of Basra lies 590 km south of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.

Four civilians injured in armed attack in Kirkuk

Kirkuk, Sept 26, (VOI) – 

Four civilians were injured in an armed attack that targeted an Iraqi army patrol vehicle in southwestern Kirkuk, an official security source from Kirkuk police said on Wednesday.

"An unknown gunman threw a grenade at a vehicle belonging to the Iraqi army in central al-Hawija, southwestern Kirkuk, wounding four civilians who were at the scene," the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). "The wounded were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment," the source added. Kirkuk is located 250 km northeast of Baghdad.

Two car bombs leave 12 casualties south of Mosul

Ninewa - Voices of Iraq Wednesday , 26 /09 /2007 Time 10:15:23

Mosul, Sept 26, (VOI)- 

At least seven persons were killed and five others were injured when two car bombs exploded on Wednesday afternoon in central Shurqat, 80 km south of Mosul, a police source said.

"Two booby-trapped cars went off in central Shurqat killing seven people, including two policemen, and injuring five," the source told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI) under condition of anonymity. "The death toll is likely to increase," he noted, adding no more details. Mosul, capital city of Ninewa province, lies 402 km north of Baghdad.

U.S. forces arrest newspaper editor near Tikrit

Kirkuk, Sept 26, (VOI)- 

A U.S. force arrested the editor-in-chief of the weekly newspaper al-Faisal and his son during a crackdown operation near Tikrit, a media source said on Wednesday.

"On Tuesday night U.S. forces raided a village near Tikrit where they arrested Mohammad Mezher al-Shaheen al-Shemri, owner and editor-in-chief of al-Faisal newspaper, and his son," the source, who asked to be unnamed, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). No word was available from the U.S. army on the incident. Al-Shemri founded the newspaper, which is being published in Kirkuk, in 2004. In 2006 he was elected as head of the Iraqi Journalists Association. "The man is also the head of the independent Iraqi Journalists Association and the reasons behind his arrest are still unknown," he added. Kirkuk is 250 km northeast of Baghdad . SH/TP

U.S. forces kill 10 persons northwest of Hilla

Hilla, Sept 26, (VOI)- 

At least 10 persons were killed, including five women and four children, on Wednesday in an attack by U.S. forces northwest of Hilla, a police source said.

"U.S. forces shelled the house of Daham Kazem al-Jenabi in al-Bahbahani region in Jarf al-Sakhr district, northwest of Hilla, killing five women and four children, who were found under the house's ruins," the source, who refused to be named, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). "The shelling was followed by an airdrop on the region, while another house was completely detroyed in the shelling," he also said. "The force made an airdrop on Jarf al-Sakhr region, including the Nawaf al-Wakaa mosque," he noted. "The mosque's imam, Hassan Mohammad Aboud al-Jenabi, was killed in the operation," he affirmed, providing no further details. No word was immediately available from the U.S. army on the incident. Hilla, capital city of Babel province, is 100 km south of Baghdad.

Five Iranian soldiers killed, injured near borders - PJAK

Ninewa, Sept 26, (VOI)- 

Fighters from the Iranian opposition party (PJAK) killed three Iranian soldiers and wounded two more near the Iraqi-Iranian-Turkish borders, a military source from PJAK said on Wednesday.

"The military wing of PJAK managed to kill three Iranian soldiers and injure two others, in addition to capturing another soldier in Doula Eishy on the Iraqi-Iranian-Turkish borders," the source told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI) on condition of anonymity. "The operation came in response to the Iranian shelling of the party's strongholds last week," he explained. The PJAK (Partiya Jiyana Azada Kurdistanę in Kurdish or Kurdistan Free Life Party) is an Iranian Kurdish military opposition group founded in 2004, said to be linked to the PKK. PJAK, although being a newly established organization, regularly launches militant operations against Iranian army forces. The group is a Kurdish nationalist group based in northern Iraq that is trying to force the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps out of the Kurdistan province of Iran and other Kurdish-inhabited areas.

Car bomb kills 10, wounds nine near Sinjar

Sinjar, Sept 26, (VOI)- 

At least 10 people were killed and nine more wounded on Wednesday morning when a car bomb exploded near Sinjar, northern Iraq, medical and police sources said.

"A car bomb detonated this morning in Um al-Thiban village, 18 km west of Sinjar district, killing 10 civilians and wounding nine, four of whom were seriously injured," Dr. Kifah Mahmoud from Sinjar hospital told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). Earlier, a police source said that a car bomb detonated this morning near Sinjar district, leaving casualties among civilians. Sinjar, a predominantly Yazidist district, witnessed a series of successive blasts in August, killing and wounding 800 civilians. Sinjar is located 120 km northwest of Mosul, the capital city of Ninewa in northern Iraq.

Two policemen killed, injured in blast in Anbar

Ramadi, Sept 26, (VOI)- 

A policeman was killed and another was injured when an explosive charge went off targeting their vehicle patrol in northern Khalidiya, a police source said.

"A roadside bomb detonated this morning targeting a police vehicle patrol in al-Jaziera region, north of Khalidiya, killing a policeman and injuring another," the source, who preferred to be unnamed, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). "Police forces sealed off the area and arrested three persons suspected of being involved in the attack," he added. "The body was sent to the forensic medicine department and the wounded were rushed to hospital for treatment," the source noted. Khalidiya, in Anbar province, is 80 km west of Baghdad.

US soldier killed in Diala, U.S. fatalities up to 3,800

Baghdad, Sept 25, (VOI) - 

A U.S. soldier was killed when an explosive charge detonated near his vehicle patrol in Diala on Tuesday, the U.S. army said.

"A Task Force Lightning soldier was killed in Diala Province, Tuesday, when an explosion occurred near his vehicle," the U.S. army said in a statement received by the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). Ba'aquba, capital city of Diala, has been the scene of a large military operation, dubbed Operation Arrowhead Ripper, with the participation of more than 10,000 Iraqi and U.S. troops hunting for gunmen in the area. With this death, the total number of U.S. service members killed since the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in March 2003 rose to 3,800, with 58 killed so far in September according to U.S. army estimates. 84 servicemen were killed in August. November 2004, which witnessed fierce battles between U.S. forces and armed groups in Falluja city, Anbar province, is still the month that saw the highest U.S. fatalities with 137. April 2004 comes second with 135, followed by May 2007, during which 126 U.S. soldiers were killed.
