OTTAWA, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) --

One Canadian soldier was killed and four others wounded while on patrol in southern Afghanistan on Monday, Canada's National Defense Department announced in a press release Tuesday.

Cpl. Nathan Hornburg, 24, was killed by a mortar shell while on patrol about 47 kilometres southwest of Kandahar. He was working to repair a broken tread on a leopard tank when the incident happened at 4:30 p.m. local time on Monday (1230 GMT), said the press release.

Another soldier was wounded in that attack.

Three other Canadian soldiers were wounded by a rocket-propelled grenade in a subsequent firefight in the same area.

The Canadian troops, together with Afghan National Security Forces, were taking part in Operation Sadiq Sarbaaz (Honest Soldier), which aims to increase security in the northern part of the Panjwaii district in order to establish a new police sub-station, the press release said.

Some 71 Canadian soldiers and one Canadian diplomat have died in Afghanistan since Canada first deployed troops there in 2002.
