US Soldier, 55 Iraqis Killed, Including 16 Executed by Death Squads, in a September 23, 2007 Report

 

The Iraq News Agency (INA) reported the following today, September 23, 2007.

- A police officer and three of his relatives were killed in Balad.

- 2 policemen were killed in Mosul, one was injured by gunmen.

- A businessman was killed inside his store in Kirkuk.

- 9 bodies of Iraqis executed by death squads were found in Baghdad, and four were found in Jabalah, south of Baghdad.

- 5 Iraqi army officers were killed by the Islamic Iraqi State militia, the killing was aired in the internet.

- 7 Iraqi fighters were killed by Iraqi security forces in Al-Mussayeb, south of Baghdad.

The Iraqi newspaper, Sotaliraq, reported the following news for today.

- 10 gunmen were killed, 22 were arrested by US forces in southwest of Kirkuk.

- A body of a policeman was found in Huwaijah, southwest of Kirkuk.

Nine unidentified bodies in Baghdad

Baghdad, Sept 22, (VOI) – 

Nine unidentified bodies were found in different areas of the Iraqi capital Baghdad during the past 24 hours, the interior ministry said on Saturday. "Police patrols found on Saturday nine unidentified bodies in different areas of Baghdad, most of them were found in Baghdad's western side (al-Karkh)," the source told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). "Six corpses were found in different neighborhoods of al-Karkh: two in al-Sidiya, two in al-Aamel and two in al-Doura," he explained. "Three more bodies were found in Rasafa, eastern side of Baghdad, two in al-Zaafaraniyah and one in al-Qahira neighborhood," the source also said. "Most of the found bodies bore signs of gunshot wounds in different parts of the body, mainly to the head," he noted. SK

3 bodies found north of Ramadi

Anbar, Sept 23, (VOI) – 

Policemen in Ramadi found three bodies of civilian people kidnapped two days ago north of the city on Sunday morning, a source in Ramadi police said.

"The bodies, which were found in a desert area near the city of al-Tharthar, (20 km) north of Ramadi, were identified as local residents of Ramadi who were kidnapped by unknown gunmen," the source, who refused to be named, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). 

Medical examinations showed that the killing of those three people was more than 12 hours ago and that the bodies showed signs of having been tortured and shot, the source said. Ramadi, the capital of the predominantly Sunni province of al-Anbar, lies 110 km west of Baghdad.

2 killed, wounded in attacks in Kirkuk

Kirkuk, Sept 23, (VOI) – 

A policeman was wounded in an attack on a checkpoint in southern Kirkuk on Sunday morning while an armed group shot down an owner of a store selling auto spare parts, police said. "The June 1 checkpoint, 5 km south of Kirkuk, came under shooting attack by an unidentified gunman, wounding a policeman," a security source told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI) under the condition of anonymity. 

The gunman escaped to an unknown location while the wounded was rushed to the Kirkuk public hospital for treatment. On the other hand, the same source said gunmen stormed an auto spare parts store and killed its owner without any apparent motives. Kirkuk is 250 km northeast of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.

Suicide bombing leaves five casualties in Diala

Diala, Sept 23, (VOI)- 

At least five people, including three Iraqi soldiers, were wounded on Sunday in a suicide bombing near a checkpoint in Diala, central Iraq, a police source said. "A suicide bomber detonated a minibus crammed with explosives near an Iraqi army checkpoint in Hibhib town, 20 km north of Ba'aquba, wounding five people," the source, who asked to be unnamed, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). 

The source added "there were three soldiers among the casualties." "The wounded were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment," he said. Ba'aquba, capital city of Diala province, is 57 km northeast of Baghdad. SK

3 killed in clashes between police, gunmen in Babel

Babel, Sept 23, (VOI) – 

Three people, including one policeman, were killed in clashes between police forces and gunmen in northeastern Hilla on Sunday morning, a security source from Babel police said. "The clashes were still ongoing and police backup was sent to the area to control the situation," Capt. Muthanna Hamid told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). The source did not reveal the reasons behind the eruption of these clashes or the organization involved. Hilla, the capital of Babel province, is 70 km south of Baghdad.

2 killed in mortar attack in northern Hilla

Babel, Sept 23, (VOI) – Two individuals were killed in a mortar attack that targeted a residential area in al-Iskandriya district, northern Hilla, an official source from Babel police said on Sunday. "Several mortars were fired at al-Duleimi neighborhood in northern Hilla's district of al-Iskandriya, killing two and causing damage to some residential buildings," the source, who spoke on conditions of anonymity, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). The source did not provide any information about the group or motivations behind the attack. Hilla, the capital city of the Shiite Babel province, is 100 km south of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.

U.S. soldier killed, another wounded in Baghdad

Baghdad, Sept 23, (VOI)- 

The U.S. army said on Sunday a service member was killed and another injured as a bomb detonated near their patrol in eastern Baghdad. "One Multi-National Division-Baghdad Soldier was killed and another wounded when an explosive-formed penetrator detonated by their patrol during combat operations in an eastern section of the Iraqi capital on Sept. 22," the U.S. army said in a statement received by the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). 

With this death, the total number of U.S. service members killed since the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in March 2003 rose to 3,797, with 55 killed so far in September according to U.S. army estimates. November 2004, which witnessed fierce battles between U.S. forces and armed groups in Falluja city, Anbar province, is still the month that saw the highest U.S. fatalities with 137. April 2004 comes second with 135, followed by May 2007 during which 126 U.S. soldiers were killed.

Unknown gunmen kill journalist in Baghdad

Baghdad, Sept 23, (VOI)- 

Unknown gunmen on Sunday attacked and killed an Iraqi journalist working for the secular al-Baghdadiyah satellite channel in Baghdad, a police source said. "Unknown gunmen in a car intercepted and shot dead Jawad Saadon al-Daami, a journalist working for the al-Baghdadiyah satellite channel, in al-Qadissiyah neighborhood, southwestern Baghdad," the source, who asked not to be named, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). Al-Daami, 40, who worked for Egypt-based-al-Baghdadiyah TV, left a wife and children. With al-Daami's death, the number of journalists killed in Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion in March 2003 reached 236 according to the Iraqi journalists' syndicate estimates. SK
