UK Zionist Federation cancels appearance of Israeli journalist Danny Rubenstein for his criticism of Israeli Apartheid state

Saturday September 01, 2007 11:19 by John Smith - IMEMC & agencies johnsmithimemc at gmail dot com

The Zionist Federation of the UK has cancelled the appearance of Haaretz journalist Danny Rubenstein at a conference in England after the columnist compared the current Israeli state to apartheid-era South Africa.

In a recently published UN report, Rubinstein is quoted as condemning the illegal Israeli wall and branding Israel “an apartheid state with four different Palestinian groups: those in Gaza, East Jerusalem, the West Bank and Arab Israelis, each of which have a different status.”

The Zionist Federation announced their decision on Friday, stating “Rubinstein’s participation in this weekend’s Zionist conference in London has been terminated by mutual agreement.”

While the Chairman of the Federation argued that he welcomed the expression of a plurality of opinions, he criticized Rubinstein’s use of the word ‘apartheid’, arguing that such a description fuels anti-Semitism.

Rubinstein is a regular contributor to Haaretz, where he sits on the editorial board. He also teaches Middle Eastern History at Ben-Gurion University.
