US Soldier, 32 Iraqis Killed, Including 6 Executed by Death Squads, in an October 8, 2007 Report

The Iraq News Agency, INA, reported the following on October 8, 2007:

- 2 people were killed, five were injured in explosion near the Polish Embassy in Baghdad.

- A large increase has been reported in children's kidney cancer, men's prostate cancer, and women's breast cancer among residents of Basra.

- 9 Iraqis were killed, 16 were injured, Three were killed and three were injured in Dora. Three more were killed, five were injured in an explosion near the local government building in Baghdad. In Baladiyat, three were killed and four were injured. 

- 6 bodies of Iraqis executed by death squads were found in Baghdad.

- A US soldier was killed, three were injured west of Baghdad.

Suicide bombing wounds seven policemen in Diala

Khalis, Oct 8, (VOI)- 

At least seven policemen were wounded on Monday when a suicide bomber detonated a car rigged with explosives in Diala, central Iraq, a security source said. "A suicide attacker detonated a car rigged with explosives, today at noon, near a police checkpoint in al-Khalis district, wounding seven policemen," the source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). The source added "most of the policemen were seriously injured and were taken to a Baghdad hospital for treatment." Khalis, a district within Diala province, is 55 km northeast of Baghdad. SK

11 gunmen killed, 2 arrested in Mosul

Mosul, Oct 8, (VOI)- 

Iraqi army forces killed 11 gunmen from the Islamic state of Iraq and arrested two more during clashes that took place on Monday morning between gunmen and Iraqi army forces in the city of Mosul, an Iraqi army source said.

"Iraqi army forces killed six gunmen from the self-styled the Islamic state of Iraq armed group and arrested two others during clashes that took place this morning with the Iraqi army in al-Methaq neighborhood in eastern Mosul," the Leader of the second division of the Iraqi army Brigadier Mutaa al-Khazragi told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). "The forces also killed five armed men from the same armed group in al-Zahraa' neighborhood in northern Mosul," he explained. Mosul, capital city of Ninewa province, is 402 km north of Baghdad.

Two car bombs leave 13 casualties in eastern, central Baghdad

Baghdad, Oct 8, (VOI)- 

Two car bombs went off on Monday in eastern and central Baghdad, killing four persons and injuring nine more, a police source said.

"The first car was detonated on the main street in al-Kamaliya region in eastern Baghdad, killing two and wounding four," the source, who preferred not to be named, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). "The second car went off in the 52 street in al-Karada region in central Baghdad, killing two people and injuring five others," he added. "Police forces sealed off the area and rushed the wounded to nearby hospitals," the source also said.

Blast leaves three policemen wounded in Kirkuk

Kirkuk, Oct 8, (VOI)- 

At least three policemen were wounded on Monday as a roadside bomb exploded near their patrol in Kirkuk, a police source said. "An explosive device went off, in early Monday, near a police vehicle patrol on the main road linking Kirkuk to Daquq district," the source, who asked not to be named, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). The explosion wounded three policemen, he added. "The wounded were rushed to a nearby hospital," the source said. Kirkuk is 250 km northeast of Baghdad. SK

15 casualties as charge explodes in northern Baghdad

Baghdad, Oct 8, (VOI)- 

At least 15 civilians were wounded on Monday when a roadside bomb went off in northern Baghdad, a police source said.

"An explosive charge detonated, this morning, near civilian minibuses using the main road leading to Eden square in al-Kadhemiya city, northern Baghdad, wounding 15 civilians, some seriously injured," the source, who requested anonymity, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). The blast also damaged two civilian cars parked nearby, the source added. "Security forces sealed off the area while ambulances rushed the wounded to a nearby hospital," he said. SK

MNF's Echo base rocketed in Diwaniya

Diwaniya, Oct 7, (VOI)- 

The Multi-National Forces' Echo base was rocketed in the predominantly Shiite city of Diwaniya, a police source said on Sunday. "The Polish forces' Echo base was attacked, this evening, with 12 Katyusha rockets," the source, who asked not to be named, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). The source who could not say if there were casualties among the Polish soldiers added "Polish forces' helicopters flew over the area following the attack." This is the third attack on the base in as many days. Diwaniya is 180 km south of Baghdad. SK

Iran reopens all border crossings with Kurdistan - source

Arbil, Oct 8, (VOI)- 

Iran reopened all border crossings with Iraq's Kurdistan region, the official spokesman for the Kurdish government said on Monday.

The Kurdish government asserted that the two weeks' closure caused a million dollars losses per day, in addition to a significant increase in prices. "All border crossings between Iran and Kurdistan were reopened: Bashmakh, Shoushmi, BervezKhan, Haj Omran and Siranban, at 9:00 am on Monday," Jamal Abdullah told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). Joman mayor had said earlier that Iran reopened on Monday morning Haj Omran border crossing with Kurdistan after it reopened one border outlet to the region on Sunday afternoon. 

"Haj Omran border crossing with Iran was reopened, today morning, after two weeks' closure following the U.S. arrest of an Iranian national in Sulaimaniya," Abdul Wahid Kuni, Joman mayor, told VOI. The mayor added, "people and trucks have began crossing the borders into Iran as of Monday morning." Haj Omran was the second border crossing reopened between Iran and Iraq's Kurdistan region during the last 24 hours. The spokesman for Iraq's Kurdistan government said on Sunday Iranian authorities reopened one border crossing with Kurdistan, while the other four crossings' reopening was put off till Monday for "technical reasons." 

Iran announced on Saturday that border crossings with Iraq's Kurdistan region would be reopened on Sunday after two weeks' closure in protest against the U.S. arrest of an Iranian trade delegation member in Sulaimaniya. On Thursday a senior Kurdish delegation headed to Tehran to convince Iranian government to reopen the crossings on the borders between Iran and Kurdistan region.
