Date: 07 / 10 / 2007 Time: 11:45

Gaza – Ma'an –

Israel on Sunday alleged that a Katyusha rocket landed in an Israeli town that had never previously been hit by a rocket fired from Gaza.

The Israeli authorities announced that a shell, which landed near a graveyard in Netivot at 7.30am, was a Katyusha rocket.

Katyusha rockets are Russian truck-mounted, self-propelled artillery.

Israeli sources said that it is the first time shells from Gaza have landed in Netivot, east of the strip.

Israel described the attack as a serious escalation on the southern front.

PRC

Eight mortar shells on Sunday morning landed in a residential area near the Kerem Shalom Crossing, between Israel and the southern Gaza Strip.

The military wing of the Popular Resistance Committees, the An Nasser Salah Addin Brigades, announced responsibility for the operation.

Israeli radio reported that one of the shells landed in an unpopulated building used as a studio, resulting in material damage.

Eyewitnesses told Ma'an's reporter that Israeli warplanes flew over the area of Kerem Shalom Crossing and Netivot after the attack.

Fatah and DFLP

A joint group of Fatah's Al-Aqsa Brigades and the National Resistance Brigades of the DFLP claimed responsibility on Saturday evening for launching a homemade projectile at the Israeli Western Negev town of Sderot.

PFLP

In a separate incident, the military wing of the PFLP, the Abu Ali Mustafa Brigades, declared that they launched a projectile towards Nir Akiva, east of the Gaza Strip.

The Palestinian military factions issued statements saying that the shelling is a reprisal for Israeli atrocities in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
