Israeli occupation forces block access to farmland at the start of the olive harvest

Date: 06 / 10 / 2007 Time: 11:25

Tulkarem – Ma'an –

Israeli occupation forces on Saturday closed the majority of agricultural roads in the eastern neighbourhood of Dair Al-Ghusoun, north of Tulkarem, in the northern West Bank.

The roads were blocked with huge mounds of earth.

The closure resulted in hundreds of Palestinian farmers being denied access to their land to collect crops and tend their fields.

The Israeli operation has taken place at the start of the Palestinian olive harvest.

In addition, Israeli occupation forces tightened the siege at the main entrances to towns and villages around Tulkarem and erected a flying checkpoint at the main street of Tulkarem.

Residents in the area condemned the Israeli action and the severe measures which have been imposed on the town.

Dair Al-Ghosson residents have been shocked by the Israelis conduct, when it has been announced to the media that restrictions on movement would be eased.

The Dair Al-Ghosoon municipality has presented a petition to all human rights and international organizations to put pressure on the Israeli government to reopen roads as it will soon be the olive harvest. Olives provide the main source of income for the residents of Dair Al-Ghosoon.
