3 US Soldiers, 21 Iraqis Killed, Including 11 Executed by Death Squads, in an October 30 Report March in Khalis demanding preacher release Diala - Voices of Iraq Tuesday , 30 /10 /2007 Time 10:38:09 Diala, Oct 30, (VOI) – Hundreds of people in the district of al-Khalis, 15 km north of Baaquba, staged a demonstration on Tuesday morning demanding the release of a Muslim preacher and others arrested with him by U.S. forces on Saturday, a notable in Khalis said. "The march, which started from central Khalis and went in the direction of the mayor's building, called for the release of Sheikh Nazem al-Nusayrawi, the imam and preacher of the Grand Mosque in Khalis, and others who were arrested with him on Saturday," Sheikh Muhammad al-Saadi told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). A security source had told VOI on Saturday that U.S. forces landed in al-Khalis killed two policemen "suspected of belonging to armed militias." No statements or comments were made by the U.S. side in this respect. "I have handed a memo signed in the name of the protesters to a U.S. commander demanding compensations for the martyrs' families, the immediate release of the detainees and stopping raids and searches in safe areas," Saadi told VOI. AE JFO: Body of kidnapped journalist found in Baghdad Baghdad - Voices of Iraq Tuesday , 30 /10 /2007 Time 10:38:09 Baghdad, Oct 30, (VOI) – An Iraqi journalist working for the weekly Baghdad al-Yawm newspaper who was reportedly kidnapped last Saturday was found dead in northern Baghdad, a statement by the Journalistic Freedoms Observatory (JFO) said. "Last Saturday Iraqi security forces found the body of Shihab Muhammad al-Haiti, a journalist, in northern Baghdad," read the statement that was published on the observatory's official website. Quoting a journalist colleague of al-Haiti, the statement said that the murdered journalist worked as a news editor and correspondent. He disappeared on Saturday morning on his way back home in western Baghdad. His body was found a few hours later in northern Baghdad." "Al-Haiti is 27 years old. He worked for al-Zaman and al-Rafideen (The two rivers, in reference to the Tigris and the Euphrates rivers) newspapers before the collapse of the former Iraqi regime," the statement stated. In another statement, the New York-based International Committee for the Protection of Journalists condemned the incident and offered its deep condolences to the journalist's family and colleagues. Established in 2003 after the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq, the JFO, a non-governmental Iraqi organization that monitors violations and aggression against media staff in Iraq, revealed that 218 media workers, including 112 journalists, have been killed in Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion in 2003. Last week, Jumana al-Obeidi, an Iraqi journalist working for the Brussels-based Radio Free Iraq, was kidnapped in Baghdad's northern neighborhood of al-Bonouk in an incident that left her driver dead. Al-Obeidi's destiny remains unknown. SS Body of kidnapped farmer found in northern Kut Wassit - Voices of Iraq Tuesday , 30 /10 /2007 Time 10:38:09 Wassit, Oct 30, (VOI) – A corpse found in northern Kut was identified as an old Iraqi farmer who was kidnapped by unknown gunmen on Monday, a local police source said. "Local police forces found the body of Abd Abbas one day after he was kidnapped by an armed group. The body, which was found in an agricultural area near al-Shahimiya village, had several gun shot wounds." the source, who requested anonymity, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). Al-Shahimiya village lies 110 northwest of Kut, the capital city of Wassit province, which lies 180 km southeast of the Iraqi capital Baghdad. SS Four unknown bodies found in Ninewa Ninewa - Voices of Iraq Tuesday , 30 /10 /2007 Time 10:38:09 Mosul, Oct 30, (VOI)- Police patrols found on Tuesday three unidentified corpses in southeastern Mosul, while a fourth body was found in Badoush region, west of Mosul, a police source said. "Police forces found this morning three unidentified bodies in al-Wehda neighborhood in southeastern Mosul," the source, who asked not to be named, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). "The bodies bore signs of gunshot wounds," he also said. "Another unknown corpse was found in Badoush region, west of Mosul," the source said, adding no further details. "The bodies were sent to the forensic medicine department in the city," he noted. Mosul, capital city of Ninewa province, is 402 km north of Baghdad. SH Five unknown bodies found in Baghdad Baghdad - Voices of Iraq Tuesday , 30 /10 /2007 Time 10:38:09 Baghdad, Oct 30, (VOI)- Five unidentified bodies were found in different areas of the Iraqi capital Baghdad over the past 24 hours, the Interior Ministry said on Tuesday. "Police patrols found five unidentified bodies in different areas of Baghdad, most of them were found in Baghdad's western side (al-Karkh)," the source told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). "Four corpses were found in different neighborhoods of al-Karkh: one in each al-Doura and al-Sidiya and two in al-Aamel," he explained. "One body was found in Palestine Street, Rasafa, eastern side of Baghdad," the source added. "Most of the bodies found bore signs of gunshot wounds to different parts of the body, mainly to the head," he noted. "An explosive device left in a bus in Garage al-Allawi went off this afternoon, killing one and injuring four," the source told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI) on condition of anonymity. "Garage al-Allawi is an area crowded with pedestrians and travelers," he noted. SH/SR Three U.S. soldiers killed southeast of Baghdad Baghdad - Voices of Iraq Tuesday , 30 /10 /2007 Time 10:38:09 Baghdad, Oct 30, (VOI) - The U.S. army said on Tuesday three soldiers were killed when an explosive charge went off near their patrol vehicle, southeast of Baghdad. "Three Multi-National Division - Center soldiers were killed when their patrol was struck by an improvised explosive device southeast of Baghdad on Oct 30," the U.S. army said in a statement received by the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). The deaths bring the number of the U.S. service members killed in Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion of the country in March 2003 to 3,842. Of this number, 36 U.S. troops have been killed so far in October. Last July saw the smallest monthly loss of life for the U.S. army in Iraq this year as 80 U.S. soldiers were killed. November 2004, which witnessed fierce battles between U.S. forces and armed groups in Falluja city, Anbar province, remains the month that saw the highest U.S. death toll with 137. April 2004 comes second with 135, followed by May 2007 during which 126 U.S. soldiers were killed. SH/SR Four gunmen arrested, civilian killed in Mosul Ninewa - Voices of Iraq Tuesday , 30 /10 /2007 Time 10:38:09 Mosul, Oct 30, (VOI) - Police forces arrested four armed men, while gunmen killed a civilian and a body was found in Mosul, a police source said on Tuesday. "A police source arrested on Tuesday night four gunmen in Garage al-Shimal region in eastern Mosul, suspected of having contact with al-Qaeda group," the Chief of al-Nasr police department Colonel Hassan Yassin told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). "Intelligence reports indicated the presence of the four persons in the region. The forces rushed to area, cordoned it off and detained them," he explained. Meanwhile, an official police source said that unidentified gunmen killed an employee working for the electricity department in Mosul. "The gunmen showered the employee with bullets near his house in al-Jameaa neighborhood in northern Mosul," the source, who preferred to remain unnamed, added. "The police also found an unknown body in al-Intesar neighborhood in southeastern Mosul," he continued. "The body bore signs of gunshot wounds to the head and the chest," the source noted. For his part, the Director of the Ninewa police department Brigadier Abdul Karim al-Juburi said that police patrols defused two bombs: the first in al-Wehda neighborhood in southwestern Mosul and the second in al-Beaaj district in the western section of the city. Mosul, capital city of Ninewa, is 405 km north of Baghdad. SH/SR Policeman killed, three wanted men arrested near Kirkuk Kirkuk - Voices of Iraq Tuesday , 30 /10 /2007 Time 10:38:09 Kirkuk, Oct 30, (VOI) - A policeman was killed in an armed attack in central Kirkuk, while a joint Iraqi-U.S. force detained three wanted men, west of the city, a police source said on Tuesday. "Unidentified gunmen opened fire on a policeman from the Kirkuk police department this afternoon in al-Nasr neighborhood behind al-Mouroug pharmacy in central Kirkuk, killing him instantly," the source told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI) under condition of anonymity. "The body was sent to the forensic medicine department in the Kirkuk hospital," he added. The source did not provide any further details. "A police force, backed by U.S. troops, waged today a crackdown operation in al-Jadida, Kuna Riwy, al-Alas villages in al-Dibs district, west of Kirkuk," the same source said. "The operation ended with the arrest if three wanted men and the confiscation of 11 weapons and local-made bombs," he added, noting that the operation ended with no casualties among the security forces. Kirkuk is located 250 km northeast of Baghdad. SH/SR Two police personnel killed in two separate incidents in Najaf Najaf - Voices of Iraq Tuesday , 30 /10 /2007 Time 10:38:09 Najaf, Oct 30, (VOI) – Two police personnel, including an officer, were assassinated by unknown gunmen in two separate incidents in the holy Shiite city of Najaf, a local police source said on Tuesday. "Local police forces found the body of a captain from Najaf's Thu al-Faqqar Brigade near his house in al-Jamiyya neighborhood in the north of the city," the source, who requested anonymity, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). "The body had a shot to the head," the source added, providing no further information about possible motivations behind the attack. Meanwhile, unidentified gunmen shot down a policeman from Najaf police force at an early hour on Tuesday morning in al-Abbasiya district in the east of the city, the same source indicated. Najaf, Iraq's most sacred Shiite city, lies 180 km southwest of the Iraqi capital Baghdad. SS 1 killed, another wounded by U.S. patrol fire in Kut Wassit - Voices of Iraq Tuesday , 30 /10 /2007 Time 10:38:09 Wassit, Oct 30, (VOI) – One man was killed and another seriously wounded by soldiers of a U.S. patrol who opened fire at them at an intersection in central Kut without any apparent motives, police said on Tuesday. "A U.S. patrol roaming the streets of Kut opened fire at a civilian vehicle on Monday evening at the al-Kafaat intersection, killing the driver and seriously wounding another passenger," a security source told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). The killed man's body was taken to the morgue of al-Zahraa public hospital while the wounded was rushed to the same hospital for treatment, the source said. Kut, the capital of Wassit, which lies 180 km southeast of Baghdad, has been witnessing unprecedented intensive U.S. patrolling. AE Two civilians killed, 10 wounded in U.S. shelling near Tikrit- source Salah al-Din - Voices of Iraq Tuesday , 30 /10 /2007 Time 10:38:09 Salah al-Din, Oct 30, (VOI) – Two civilians were killed and 10 others wounded in a U.S. shelling of two villages east of Tikrit, an official security source from Salah al-Din province said on Tuesday. "U.S. aircrafts bombed the villages of Abu al-Obeid and Abu al-Ojeil east of Tikrit on Monday evening, killing two civilians and wounding 10 others," the source, who preferred to remain unnamed, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). "The shelling came one hour after an explosive device attack on a U.S. patrol near Tikrit," the source indicated. The source did not provide further details and no comment was available from the U.S. side on the incident. Tikrit, the capital city of Salah al-Din province, lies 175 north of the Iraqi capital Baghdad. SS Clashes between security forces, gunmen in Samarra Salah al-Din - Voices of Iraq Tuesday , 30 /10 /2007 Time 10:38:09 Salah al-Din, Oct 30, (VOI) – Clashes erupted on Tuesday morning between unidentified gunmen and security forces of the Iraqi interior ministry in the city of Samarra, an official security source said. No information was immediately obtained about casualties, the source said. "Unidentified gunmen attacked security forces headquarters in Samarra with RPG-7 missiles but no casualties were revealed yet," the source told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). U.S. forces cordoned off the site of the clashes to prevent gunmen from approaching the Iraqi security forces' headquarters, the source said. Samarra, a city in the province of Salah al-Din, lies 120 km north of the Iraqi capital Baghdad. AE 2 al-Qaeda members killed, 7 arrested in Ba'aquba Diala - Voices of Iraq Tuesday , 30 /10 /2007 Time 10:38:09 Diala, Oct 30, (VOI) – A joint Iraqi-U.S. force killed two gunmen of al-Qaeda Organization in Iraq and arrested seven others in the city of Baaquba, the Diala operations chief said on Tuesday. "The operation was launched on Monday evening in the villages of al-Othmaniya, al-Luqmaniya and Abaret Bahrez in Baaquba," Maj. General Abdul-Kareem al-Rubaie told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). "A large weapons cache was found and three vehicles and house bomb belonging to gunmen were destroyed," said al-Rubaie. Baaquba, the capital of Diala province, lies 57 km northeast of Baghdad. AE
