70 Iraqis Killed, Including 25 Executed by Death Squads, Just Two Days After Claims of Less War Attacks, an October 29, 2007 Report
20 headless bodies found in Iraq www.chinaview.cn 2007-10-30 04:54:36 Print BAGHDAD, Oct. 29 (Xinhua) -- Twenty decapitated bodies were found north of Baghdad with one of them believed to be a tribal leader, Iraqi police said Monday. A local police source told Xinhua that the bodies were discovered at the Gusarin village near Ba'aqouba, capital of Diyala province. The source said the bodies were found bleeding, which meant they were beheaded not long ago. He said the identification process was underway, adding that one of the victims was believed to be a tribal leader. Tribal leaders, who are moving toward joining the government in striking relentless discriminate killings have been increasingly targeted. Ba'aqouba, some 65 kilometers northeast of Baghdad, has been a hotbed of (Iraqi fighters) since the U.S.-led invasion in 2003. Early in the day, a suicide bomber killed at least 25 police recruits and officers in the city, wounding 22 others. The attacker blew himself up at Ishbiliyah Square where the recruits were gathering outside the police headquarters to sign up for joining the Iraqi police. "A group of gunmen killed a policeman in a region near al-Jisr al-Khames tunnel in western Mosul," the source, who preferred to remain unnamed, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). "Unknown armed men also killed a housewife in al-Wehda neighborhood in southwestern Mosul, while a civilian was killed by gunmen in al-Jazaer neighborhood in the northeastern section of the city," he added. "The bodies were sent to the forensic medicine department in Mosul," the source said, adding no further details. He also said that an explosive charge went off this evening targeting an Iraqi army vehicle patrol in western Mosul, injuring an Iraqi soldier. Mosul, capital city of Ninewa province, lies 405 km north of Baghdad. "Police patrols found four unidentified bodies in different areas of Baghdad, most of them were found in Baghdad's western side (al-Karkh)," the source told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). "Three corpses were found in different neighborhoods of al-Karkh: two bodies in al-Aamel and one in al-Sidiya," he explained. "One body was found in Ur neighborhood, eastern side of Baghdad," the source added. "Most of the bodies found bore signs of gunshot wounds to different parts of the body, mainly to the head," he noted. "A car crammed with explosives was detonated on Monday in Garage al-Bayaa region in western Baghdad, injuring four civilians," the source told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI) under condition of anonymity. "The region is crowded with pedestrians and vehicles," he noted. Meanwhile, the same source said that three persons were wounded in a bomb explosion in Sahet al-Watheq in al-Karada region in central Baghdad. "The wounded were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment," he added. In Diala in northeastern Iraq, the Diala police operations command chief said that 28 policemen, including an officer, were killed and 20 more were injured, including a child and a woman in suicide bombing in central Baaquba on Monday. In Salah el-Din, a medical source said on Monday that four civilians were killed and 16 others wounded when an explosives-rigged car went off in al-Siniya district in western Baiji. A security source in Najaf said that unidentified gunmen killed Dr. Adel Abdul-Hadi, a professor of philosophy at the College of Arts, Kufa University, while returning home in eastern Najaf on Sunday evening. In Ninewa in northern Iraq, an official security source said that unknown gunmen shot down a policewoman and a civilian in two separate incidents in northeastern and western Mosul on Monday. An unidentified body was found by police forces in al-Wehda neighborhood in the southern section of the province. Unidentified gunmen killed four members of the same family and wounded another in an armed attack on a house in eastern Mosul on Monday, an official source from Ninewa police said. In Anbar province, western Iraq, an official police source said on Monday morning that two gunmen shot down a policeman near the city of al-Falluja before security authorities managed to arrest them. Police patrols in the city of Kut found the unidentified body of a woman on Monday morning, police said. A Multi-National Force (MNF) spokesman said the British base at Basra International Airport, 25 km northwest of the city, came under an attack by Katyusha rockets at an early hour on Monday morning. An Iraqi serviceman was killed and 12 others wounded in a truck accident in northwestern Basra on Monday noon, an official source from Basra police said. "Armed men raided a house in the Eastern Ninewa area, eastern Mosul, and opened their machine-gun fire at the people inside, killing a man, his wife, sister and mother and wounding his brother," the source, who did not want his name mentioned, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). The source said the motives "behind the crime were not verified." He, however, said "the incident could be due to one of the family member's joining of the police," adding "he was not inside the house then." Mosul, the capital of Ninewa province, lies 402 km north of Baghdad. "The gunmen killed the policeman in the area of Amiriyat al-Falluja, (16 km) south of Falluja," the source, who declined to have his name mentioned, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). Falluja, the largest city in the predominantly Sunni province of al-Aanbar, lies 45 km west of Baghdad while Ramadi, the capital, is 110 km west of Baghdad. AE Four civilians killed, 16 wounded in car bomb attack in Baiji Salah al-Din - Voices of Iraq Monday , 29 /10 /2007 Time 11:18:07 Salah al-Din, Oct 29, (VOI) – Four civilians were killed and 16 others wounded when an explosives-rigged car went off in al-Siniya district in western Baiji, Salah al-Din province, a local medic said on Monday. "A car bomb parked near a flour factory in al-Siniya district was detonated on Monday morning, killing four individuals, including a child, and injuring 16 others," the source, who requested anonymity, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). "Two houses were destroyed in the explosion, which also caused huge damage to other nearby buildings," the source explained. Baiji is located 35 km north of Tikrit, hometown of former President Saddam Hussein and the capital city of Salah al-Din province, which lies 175 km north of the Iraqi capital Baghdad. "On Monday morning unidentified gunmen opened fire on a policewoman working in al-Salam Hospital in Mosul's northeastern neighborhood of al-Noor, killing her on the spot," the source, who preferred to remain unnamed, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). "In another incident in Mosul, unknown gunmen shot down a civilian in the west of the city," the source added. SS Unidentified body of woman found in Wassit Wassit - Voices of Iraq Monday , 29 /10 /2007 Time 11:18:07 Wassit, Oct 29, (VOI) – Police patrols in the city of Kut found the unidentified body of a woman on Monday morning, police said. "The body, found in the neighborhood of al-Hawraa, southern Kut, showed signs of having been shot in the head and chest," a security source told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI) on condition of anonymity. The source did not give more details. Kut, the capital of Wassit province, is 180 km southeast of Baghdad. AE British base in Basra attacked Basra - Voices of Iraq Monday , 29 /10 /2007 Time 11:18:07 Basra, Oct 29, (VOI) - The British base at Basra International Airport, 25 km northwest of the city, came under an attack with Katyusha rockets at an early hour on Monday morning, Multi-National Force (MNF) spokesman said. "British forces fired back at the source of the rockets in al-Muhandiseen neighborhood," MNF media spokesman Major Matthew Bird told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI) by phone. Bird did not specify how many rockets were fired at the base or indicate whether the attack caused casualties among the British troops. British soldiers are now stationed in one base– the Basra International Airport – after handing over to the Iraqi forces other military bases in former presidential palaces. The British forces in Basra, 590 km south of the Iraqi capital Baghdad, keep 5,250 troops within MNF personnel in Iraq after withdrawing 1,850 soldiers during the past few months. Britain was the United States' prime ally in the March 2003 invasion of Iraq. SS University professor killed in Najaf Najaf - Voices of Iraq Monday , 29 /10 /2007 Time 11:18:07 Najaf, Oct 29, (VOI) – Unidentified gunmen killed Dr. Adel Abdul-Hadi, a professor of philosophy at the College of Arts, Kufa University, while returning home in eastern Najaf on Sunday evening, a security source said. "Unknown armed men in a vehicle opened drive-by fire at Abdul-Hadi near al-Kufa municipal council building (10 km eastern Najaf) at 10:00 p.m. on Sunday, killing him instantly," the source, who preferred not to have his name mentioned, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). The gunmen then escaped to an unknown place, the source said, giving no further details about the incident, its motives or the organization behind it. Several Iraqi university professors were targets for assassinations by unidentified armed groups during the years that followed the fall of the former regime in 2003. The holy Shiite city of Najaf, said to be hosting the tomb of Imam Ali Ibn Abi Taleb, the prophet Muhammad's cousin and the holiest figure for Shiite Muslims, lies 160 km southwest of the Iraqi capital Baghdad. AE Ba'aquba bombing fatalities up to 28, wounded 20 Diala - Voices of Iraq Monday , 29 /10 /2007 Time 11:18:07 Diala, Oct 29, (VOI) – Deaths from Monday's earlier suicide bombing in central Ba'aquba rose to 28, in addition to 20 others wounded, the Diala police operations command chief said. "The suicide explosive belt bombing attack amongst a gathering of policemen on Monday morning resulted in the death of 28 policemen, including one officer, and the injury of 20 others, including a child and a woman," Maj. General Abdul-Kareem al-Rubaie told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). An official security source said earlier that twenty policemen were killed and 25 others wounded in an initial count of the deadly suicide bombing. "A suicide bomber wearing an explosive belt blew himself up amidst a gathering of forces of the Diala police command's 2nd quick intervention contingent in central Ba'aquba, killing 20 policemen and injuring 25 others, including a child and a woman," the source, who refused to be named, told VOI. "The policemen were having their morning training on the main road leading to the Blue Dome (the headquarters of the local council) when a suicide bomber attacked them," the source added. HURST Associated Press Writer Oct 29, 2007, 4:27 PM EDT BAGHDAD (AP) -- A suicide bomber rode his bicycle into a crowd of police recruits in Ba'aqouba on Monday, killing at least 29 people in a province that has become a battleground among U.S. forces (and Iraqi fighters). Police and hospital officials reported at least 19 people wounded in the attack in Ba'aqouba, the capital of Diyala province 35 miles northeast of Baghdad. Mohammed al-Kirrawi, a doctor at the Baqouba general hospital, said most of the victims were struck by ball bearings packed in the bomber's suicide vest and that the hospital lacked equipment to save many of the wounded. One of the wounded recruits told The Associated Press he decided to join the police force only after his father was killed in sectarian violence and he was left as the large family's sole provider. A U.S. brigadier general was wounded in a roadside bombing Monday in northern Baghdad, the military reported. Brig. Gen. Jeffrey Dorko, commanding general of the Gulf Region Division, was the highest-ranking American officer to be hurt since the conflict began in March 2003. Dorko was in stable condition and was evacuated to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany; his injuries were not life-threatening.
