Oil pipeline near Kirkuk detonated

Kirkuk - Voices of Iraq Friday , 19 /10 /2007 Time 4:05:49

Kirkuk, Oct 19, (VOI) –

Unidentified gunmen blew up a branch oil pipeline southwest of Kirkuk which is carrying crude oil to a refinery in the city, a source from Kirkuk police said on Friday. "The explosion caused a fire and a black cloud was seen overhead while fire engines rushed to the scene," the source, who preferred not to have his name mentioned, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI).

A source from the North Oil Company told VOI that maintenance teams were trying to control the situation, expecting the firefighters to put out the blaze during the next few hours. Iraq's oil exports from the northern fields in Kirkuk are occasionally stalled due to armed groups' detonation of oil pipelines, which costs the war-troubled country great losses. The last time Iraqi oil exports stopped was on Sunday because oil reservoirs in the Turkish port of Ceyhan, which receives 300,000 barrels per day from Kirkuk fields, were full. Kirkuk lies 250 km northeast of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.

One U.S. soldier was killed and three others wounded when an explosive charge went off near their vehicle in the province of Salah al-Din, the U.S. army said on Friday.

"A U.S. soldier of the Task Force Lightning force was killed during a mission in Salah al-Din when an explosion occurred near his vehicle on Wednesday," according to a U.S. army statement received by the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). "Three other soldiers were wounded in the incident and rushed to a medical facility of the coalition forces," the statement read, not giving further details.

The death raises to 3,831 the number of U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq since the March 2003 invasion, including 24 killed in October 2007. From this number 66 U.S. soldiers were killed last month, the lowest death toll for the U.S. army in a month since August 2006, when 65 soldiers were killed. November 2004, when fierce clashes erupted between U.S. forces and armed groups in Falluja, in the Sunni province of al-Anbar, is still the month with the highest U.S. casualties – 137. February 2004 is the month with the lowest U.S. fatalities in Iraq with only 20 soldiers.
