Summit of leaders of Caspian Sea states releases 25-point statement 

Tehran, Oct 15, IRNA 

Caspian Sea-Summit-Statement Summit of leaders of the Caspian Sea littoral states on Tuesday released a 25-point statement on major regional and international issues.

The presidents of Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Russia and Turkmenistan thanked President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad for his initiative to host the second Summit of the Caspian Sea states in Tehran to discuss regional and international issues and prospects for multilateral cooperation and the legal status of the Caspian Sea in a constructive atmosphere.

The Caspian Sea leaders believe that cooperation of the five littoral states on the basis of friendship and good neighborly relations will serve their national interests and regional security.

They called for final approval of legal status of the Caspian Sea in light of the agreements already reached by the five Caspian states which envisaged fair distribution of resources of the Caspian Sea among the neighboring states.

The leaders of the Caspian Sea littoral states are well-prepared to hold regular contacts on five-party cooperation, bilateral, regional and international subjects.

They reaffirmed commitment to Charter of the United Nations and international law including respect for national sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity and equality of the nations and not to resort to use of force or intimidation.

Caspian Sea Summit successful

Senior Presidential Advisor Mojtaba Samareh Hashemi said on Tuesday that the Second Summit of Caspian Sea Littoral States held in Tehran was successful.

Samareh Hashemi told reporters that the presidents attending the summit described it as a jump-start for subsequent steps of cooperation.

He noted that the final statement was a collective opinion and 'great mutual understanding' on legal regime of the Caspian Sea.

Pointing to the fact that all littoral states shared common stances in the summit, he said that the four presidents of Caspian Sea littoral states have commonly said that the summit was more successful than all others.

Iranian, Russian, Turkmen, Kazakh and Azeri presidents signed a 25-point statement on important issues of the Caspian Sea, region and world.

Late President of Turkmenistan Saparmurat Niyazov proposed the idea of holding the first official summit of the Caspian Sea Littoral State, which was held in Ashkhabad in May 2002.
