Two civilians injured by U.S. fire in southern Baghdad

Baghdad, Oct 17, (VOI)- 

A police source said that two civilians were injured on early Wednesday when U.S. forces opened fire randomly in the main street that links Baghdad with southern provinces in al-Wehda neighborhood in southern Baghdad.

"A U.S. vehicle patrol was heading to Baghdad this morning and collided with a civilian vehicle," the source told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI), noting that the soldiers opened fire randomly against civilians in the car. "The random fire seriously injured two civilians, including a woman, who were rushed to al-Sowiera public hospital for treatment," he added. "The fire caused also material damage to a nearby civilian vehicle," he continued. The U.S. army did not comment on the incident.

Seven policemen killed as bomb explodes in Diwaniya

Diwaniya, Oct 17, (VOI)- 

Seven policemen were killed on early Wednesday in a bomb blast, southeast of Diwaniya, a police source said.

"An explosive device went off at dawn near a police vehicle patrol in Afak district, southeast of Diwaniya, killing three policemen instantly and seriously wounding four others," the source, who preferred not to be named, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). "The wounded died shortly after arriving at a nearby hospital," he noted. "The policemen were attacked while on their way for Afak Police Station in east Diwaniya to extend assistance after having came under an armed attack after midnight Tuesday," the source added. At least five civilians were killed and 23 were wounded on Monday in clashes that erupted between joint Iraq-Polish forces and unknown gunmen. A source from the Diwaniya Province Council said a curfew was imposed in the city as of 10:00 p.m. on Monday until further notice. About 900 Polish soldiers are stationed in the province of al-Qadissiyah as part of the U.S.-led MNF with the aim of backing the Iraqi army's 8th Division and training Iraqi policemen and army soldiers. Diwaniya lies 180 km south of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.

Suicide bombing leaves one Peshmerga fighter dead, 10 wounded near Jalawla

Jalawla, Oct 17, (VOI)- 

At least one Peshmerga fighter was killed and 10 more were wounded on Wednesday when a suicide bomber detonated a truck crammed with explosives near a Kurdish Peshmerga fighters' checkpoint near Jalawla town, northeast of Baghdad, a police source said.

"A suicide attacker detonated a truck crammed with explosives, this morning, near a Peshmerga fighters' checkpoint, killing a Peshmerga fighter and wounding ten others," the source, who requested anonymity, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). The source provided no further details. Meanwhile, the spokesman for the Kurdish Peshmerga fighters, Jabbar Yawer, said that a brigade of Peshmerga deployed in Tabaj near Jalawla town, 180 km northeast of Baghdad, to keep order there. "The Kurdish fighters' deployment was coordinated with the U.S. forces in the area," Yawer added. Jalawla, part of Diala province, is a predominantly Kurdish town near Iraq borders with Iran. SK
