Kirkuk's deputy police chief escapes assassination attempt

Kirkuk, Oct 13, (VOI) – 

Kirkuk's deputy police chief survived an attempt on his life when an explosive charge went off near his convoy in the south of the city, a security source said on Saturday.

"Kirkuk's deputy police chief, Major General Torhan Abdul Rahman Yousuf survived an assassination attempt when an explosive device targeted his convoy in Tiseen area in southern Kirkuk," police Brigadier Sarhat Qadir told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). "One of his bodyguards was killed and two others wounded," the source explained. 

The attack comes during a period of particular violence against police chiefs in Iraq's northern provinces. Last Tuesday unknown gunmen killed Brigadier Abdul Aali Zanon Mubarak, Ninewa's deputy police chief and wounded Major General Abdul Amir Mahmoud, the head of Kirkuk police's bureau of investigation, along with two of his companions. On Wednesday, a car bomb was detonated near the convoy of Salah al-Din's national security director, killing five individuals and wounding 12 others. On Thursday, a bombing attack targeting Kirkuk's police chief killed three of his bodyguards and wounded 50 others.

Kirkuk, a mixed city of Kurds, Turkmen, Christians and Arabs, is located 250 km northeast of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.

Four unknown corpses found in Baghdad

Baghdad, Oct 12, (VOI)-

Four unidentified bodies were found on Friday in different areas of the Iraqi capital Baghdad, the Interior Ministry said.

"Police patrols found on Friday four unidentified bodies in different areas of Baghdad, most of them were found in Baghdad's western side (al-Karkh)," the source told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). 

"Three corpses were found in different neighborhoods of al-Karkh: one in each of al-Aamel, al-Saidiyah and al-Eaalam," he explained. "One more body was found in al-Shaab neighborhood in Rasafa, eastern side of Baghdad," the source also said. "Most of the bodies found bore signs of gunshot wounds to different parts of the body, mainly to the head," he noted.

Policeman killed, three houses burnt in clashes in Diwaniya

Diwaniya, Oct 12, (VOI)- 

Fierce clashes flared up on Friday between gunmen and joint police and army forces in Diwaniya city, leaving a policeman dead and three houses burnt, a police source said.

“Unidentified gunmen attacked the joint forces’ center in central Diwaniya by light weapons and rocket propelled grenades (RPG),” the source told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI) under condition of anonymity. “The clashes left a passing by policeman dead and three houses completely burned,” he added. The joint forces’ center in al-Iskan neighborhood came under daily fire attack by unidentified gunmen. Diwaniya is 180 km south of Baghdad.

Central Baghdad blast casualties rise to 18

Baghdad, Oct 12, (VOI)- 

The casualties of the car bomb blast that ripped through a crowded commercial area in central Baghdad on Friday afternoon rose to two dead and 16 wounded, a police source said.

"The car bomb that detonated, this afternoon, near a crowded commercial area in al-Bab al-Sharqi, killed two policemen and wounded 16 civilians," the source told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). The source could not say whether the car bomb was remotely detonated or by a suicide bomber. 

The area is crowded with shoppers on Fridays as it hosts many shops selling men's wears. "Police forces sealed off the area banning civilians from coming closer to the blast location, while the wounded were rushed to a nearby hospital," the source said. Earlier, a police source said that four people were killed and six others wounded on Friday when a car bomb exploded near a crowded commercial area in al-Bab al-Sharqi area, central Baghdad.

Ninewa governor resigns due to deteriorating security conditions

Ninewa, Oct 12, (VOI) – 

Ninewa Governor Muhammad Dreid Kashmoula resigned from his post on Friday due to security-related ministries' failure to respond to requirements to maintain stability and curb violence in the province.

"I am tendering my resignation due to the deteriorating security conditions in Ninewa and the failure to impose security and order," Kashmoula told reporters on Friday morning. Kashmoula did not say whether he already offered his resignation or plans to do this in the future. Comments or details about the resignation could not be obtained immediately. Kashmoula has been governor of Ninewa, 402 km north of the Iraqi capital Baghdad, since the year 2004. 

Mosul, Ninewa's capital, and other towns in the province have been the scene of nearly daily acts of violence, attacks and bombings by armed groups targeting Iraqi security forces and U.S. troops there. The recent of these attacks was on Thursday, when four Kurdish security (peshmerga) soldiers and four civilians were wounded in a truck bomb attack that targeted a headquarters of Iraqi President Jalal Talabani's Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) in Mosul.

Touz Khormato casualties rise to 22, mostly children

Salah al-Din, Oct 12, (VOI) – 

Friday's earlier explosive device attack in the district of Touz Khormato, north of Tikrit, rose to two deaths and 20 injuries, mostly children, on the first day of Eidul-Fitr in the central and northern provinces in Iraq, an official security source said on Friday.

"The charge went off near a group of children jubilating and gathering to play the Eid games in the district," the source, who declined to have his name mentioned, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). Earlier on Friday, a police source said one civilian was killed and 16 others, mostly women and children, were wounded when an explosive charge went off in an outdoor market north of Tikrit. 

"The device was inside a bag of flour left in the market," the source told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). The wounded were rushed to a hospital in Touz Khormato for treatment, the source added. The majority of the victims were Kurdish children who were out on the streets to celebrate the first day of Eidul-Fitr. The ministry of awqaf (religious endowments) in the Iraqi Kurdistan region and the Sunni Endowment on Thursday announced that Friday will be the first day of the month of Shawal and Eidul-Fitr. 

The district of Touz Khormato, 185 km north of the Iraqi capital Baghdad, is inhabited by a mix of Iraqis, mostly Turkoman Shiite Muslims who are still waiting for decisions by Shiite clerics in the holy city of Najaf to determine the beginning of Eidul-Fitr, expected to be on Saturday or Sunday. Tikrit, the capital of Salah al-Din province, lies 175 km north of Baghdad.

Suicide attack kills 9, wounds 24 in southeastern Baghdad

Baghdad, Oct 12, (VOI) – 

Nine people were killed and 24 others wounded when a suicide bomber drove his vehicle rigged with explosives into a coffee shop in the area of New Baghdad on the eve of Eidul-Fitr (Lesser Bairam) festivity for Sunni Muslims in Iraq, police said on Friday.

"The incident took place at nearly 09:00 p.m. on Thursday at the café usually frequented by young men in the area after the iftar (the fast-breaking meal during the holy fasting month of Ramadan)," a police source, who asked not to have his name mentioned, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). 

The incident coincided with the Sunni Endowment's announcement that Friday will be the first day of the month of Shawal and the first day of Eidul-Fitr, the festivity that follows the month of Ramadan. Meanwhile, Shiite Muslims in Iraq are waiting for statements by the Shiite clerics in the holy city of al-Najaf to determine the beginning of the month of Shawal and Eidul-Fitr, expected to be Saturday or Sunday.

U.S. army admits killing 15 civilians in al-Anbar

Anbar, Oct 12, (VOI) – 

The U.S. army admitted on Friday that its troops killed 15 civilians, including women and children, in an operation it said targeted senior leaders of al-Qaeda Organization in Iraq.

"Nineteen gunmen were killed, six others wounded and one arrested in the area of al-Tharthar lake in the predominantly Sunni province of al-Anbar during the operation that was carried out on Thursday," the U.S. army said in a statement received by the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). 

Intelligence reports held that leaders in al-Qaeda were meeting in the attack site, which was later targeted by aircraft-backed infantry troops, the statement read. "Civilian deaths in the operation were six women and nine children in addition to the injury of one woman and three children," the statement admitted. The wounded were rushed to the nearby military medical units after received quick treatment on the attack theater, it added.
