Continuation of Iran-US talks on Iraq needs more study

Tehran, Sept 30, IRNA

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman, Mohammad-Ali Hosseini, said here Sunday that since no changes have been witnessed in Washington's stands, further studies should be conducted on the continuation of Iran-US talks on Iraq.

Talking to reporters during his weekly press briefing, Hosseini added that the US moves against international laws. The last case of violation of international laws by the US was detention of Mahmoud Farhadi.

Farhadi, an employee in charge of trade exchanges in the governor general's office of Kermanshah, was arrested by US forces in the Iraqi city of Suleymaniya in mid September. He was on an official visit at the head of an economic delegation.

His visit had taken place with the permission of Iraq's Kurdish government with the cooperation of Iraqi officials in Baghdad.

On release of Farhadi, Hosseini reiterated that his release is being followed up through official channels and Iraqi authorities.

Report: Iran ready to help U.S. in Iraq's stabilization

LONDON, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) --

Iran is ready to help the United States in the stabilization of Iraq should Washington set a timetable for its troop withdrawal from Iraq, local media reported Monday, citing a top Iranian security official.

Ali Larijani, the top security official, made the remarks in an interview with Financial Times newspaper which was published Monday.

Larijani, secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, said if the U.S. government has "a clear definition of a timetable,we will help them materialize it."

However, if Washington "is persisting with its mistakes, it should not ask for help from us," he said.

Larijani rejected U.S. accusations that Iran is providing weapons to Iraq's anti-U.S. militias, saying what Washington said was "lies."

Iran was the only country in the region to have supported Iraq's government and democratic process, he said.

He also expressed appreciation of the U.S. Democratic party and the British government's Iraq policy.

The U.S. Democratic Party's call for a timetable for U.S troop's withdrawal from Iraq "seems to be logical," he said, while praising the British government as "more intelligent" than its U.S. counterpart as it has made adjustments and retreated to Basra airport.
