ISLAMABAD, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) --

The Election Commission of Pakistan on Monday announced that a total of five candidates including President General Pervez Musharraf would contest the forthcoming presidential elections, a local TV channel DAWN NEWS reported.

National Assembly Speaker Chaudhry Amir Hussain, serving as a covering candidate of Musharraf, withdrew his nomination papers which were accepted by the Election Commission on Sunday, according to the DAWN NEWS report.

According to the schedule of presidential elections published by the Election Commission earlier, the publication of the candidates list is the last step before the presidential polling due on Oct. 6.

Local media reports indicate that Musharraf enjoys a comfortable majority in the parliament and provincial assemblies.

The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed petitions challenging Musharraf's dual office and candidature for the presidential elections, a sign that Musharraf was allowed to contest the presidential elections in uniform.

ISLAMABAD, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) --

At least 15 people were killed in a suicide attack in North West Frontier Province of Pakistan (NWFP) on Monday, the army spokesman Waheed Arshad said.

A suicide bomber was traveling in an auto rickshaw and detonated explosives near a police van in a crowded place at Nizaam Bazaar of Bannu district in NWFP, according to local TV channels.

Arshad was quoted by a local TV channel DAWN NEWS as saying that up to 15 people including 11 civilians and four policemen were killed in the attack.

Around 20 were injured in the blast and some of them are stated to be in critical condition, the DAWN NEWS report said.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

The security situation in Northwest Pakistan worsened after local militants in North Waziristan scrapped a peace deal with the government in mid-July. As a result, attacks targeting security forces took place frequently in the area, leaving more than 300 people dead since mid-July.
