Israeli occupation government tapped international telephone calls for 30 years

(Ma'anImages) Bethlehem – Ma'an –

Israeli censors have been tapping citizens' international telephone calls for 30 years, Israeli Channel 10 TV revealed on Tuesday.

According to a survey conducted by Channel 10, dozens of Israeli soldiers were employed in a censorship foundation, established in Tel Aviv in 1973.

The declared goal of the foundation was ensuring that foreign correspondents did not leak secrets that could harm Israeli security. All outgoing telephone calls from Israel to the rest of the world passed through the military censorship foundation.

Channel 10 added that soldiers and officers were supposed to stop tapping calls after ascertaining they did not pose a security threat. However many officers continued to listen to the calls regardless of the context.

Some soldiers admitted recording and distributing calls between lovers while others said they tapped a call by an Israeli leader without his knowledge.
