Palestinian children in Gaza demonstrate against sanctions imposed on them by Israel-US-EU

[ 02/11/2007 - 11:11 AM ]

GAZA, (PIC)--

The Popular Committee Against Sanctions organised, on Thursday evening, a demonstration for children of Gaza to protest the ongoing siege and closure of border crossings.

Children wore the Palestinian kofeyya and lit candles during the march and were lead by a delegation from the Popular Committee including the chairman of the committee and member of the PLC Jamal al-Khudari.

The children held placards calling for an end to the siege which was imposed by Israel and western countries after Hamas won the parliamentary elections.

The protesting children called on the international community to work towards making the Palestinian children live in peace and freedom, like other children around the world.

Jamal al-Khudari said in a press conference he held after the demonstration the children are the future and that the popular committee, which he chairs, was founded to serve those children and the rest of the Palestinian population to work towards dismantling the oppressive siege.

Khudari also stressed that the siege targeted the Gaza Strip and the West Bank and that if it was allowed to succeed then it will be used elsewhere. He called on Arab and Islamic states to immediately intervene in support of the Palestinian people to save them from the oppressive siege and defend "rights, security and peace".

He also said that the siege will effect every aspect of Palestinian life and called on those who love peace to work towards breaking the siege.

Khudari stressed that the committee he heads is of no political colour and works outside the political wrangling making this a good opportunity for unity of action in the Palestinian street.

He pointed out that there were about one thousand patients threatened with death because they were not allowed to seek medical treatment outside the Gaza Strip as a result of the closure of border crossings. That is in addition to thousands of students who cannot join their universities because of the closure.

He also said that the closure of crossings has resulted in the lack of essential food and medical supplies in the Gaza Strip and resulted in the closure of 3500 factories and workshops because of lack of raw materials and denial of exporting the finished products.

He also sent a letter to Alvaro de Soto, the former UN Middle East envoy, explaining the effects of the siege on the Palestinian people and calling for international efforts to end such a siege.
