Nasrullah: Israel preparing for war on Lebanon

Sunday November 11, 2007 17:32 by John Smith - IMEMC & agencies johnsmithimemc at gmail dot com

Sheikh Hassan Nasrullah, the Secretary-General of the Hizbullah movement, on Sunday claimed that Israeli military drills near the Lebanese border proved that the country was preparing for a fresh offensive on Lebanon.

Speaking at a rally in Beirut, Nasrullah claimed that the Israeli administration was readying for a fresh attack against the Lebanese people, proof of which laid in the size and scale of recent military maneuvers.

''The enemy has been conducting military maneuvers for months. The latest maneuvers occurred ... near the Lebanese border in which 50,000 Israeli officers and soldiers participated ... these maneuvers are to prepare for an attack on Lebanon,'' Nasrullah said.

Israeli forces last attacked Lebanon in July 2006 when, under the auspices of retrieving two kidnapped Israeli soldiers and ceasing the fire of rockets into Israeli territory by the Hizbullah movement, Israel launched massive air strikes and invaded southern Lebanon. While a definitive number of casualties has been hard to establish, at least 1500 people, the vast majority of whom were Lebanese, were killed in the conflict.
