Ninewa governor survives attempted assassination

Mosul, Nov 11, (VOI)- 

Ninewa governor Duraid Kashmoula survived on Sunday an attempt on his life when two roadside bombs detonated near his motorcade in Mosul, a police source said. "Ninewa governor Duraid Kashmoula survived unharmed an attempt on his life, today, when two roadside bombs detonated near his motorcade in west side of Mosul city," 

General Wathiq al-Hamdani, Ninewa police chief, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). This is the second attempt on Kashmoula's life after he survived a similar attempt in late October. Mosul, capital city of Ninewa province, is located 405 km north of Baghdad. It is a predominantly Sunni city. SK

Two casualties as charge explodes in western Baghdad

Baghdad, Nov 11, (VOI)- 

At least one civilian was killed and another was wounded on Sunday as an explosive charge detonated in western Baghdad, a police source said. "An explosive charge detonated, this afternoon, near a policeman's house in al-Bayya neighborhood, killing a passer-by and wounding another," the source, who requested anonymity, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). The source added that the explosion also damaged the target house. SK

Four unidentified bodies found in Baghdad

Baghdad, Nov 11, (VOI)- 

Four unidentified bodies were found in different areas of the Iraqi capital Baghdad over the past 24 hours, the Interior Ministry said on Sunday. "Police patrols found four unidentified bodies in different areas of Baghdad, most of them were found in Baghdad's western side (al-Karkh)," the source told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). 

"Three corpses were found in different neighborhoods of al-Karkh: one in each al-Doura and al-Sidiya and al-Bayya," he explained. "One body was found in Sulaikh neighborhood, Rasafa, eastern side of Baghdad," the source added. "Most of the bodies found bore signs of gunshot wounds to different parts of the body, mainly to the head," he noted. SK

Student killed, 1 wounded, 2 kidnapped in attack in Diala

Diala, Nov 11, (VOI) – 

Unidentified gunmen killed a student, wounded another and kidnapped two others in an armed attack on an institute in central Baaquba on Sunday, an official source in Diala said. "A group of armed men stormed the Technical Institute in the al-Tahrir neighborhood, central Baaquba, and opened a trigger-happy volley of fire that killed one student," the source, who declined to have his name mentioned, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). 

"Another student was wounded and two others kidnapped and led to an unknown place," the source added. Meanwhile, Maj. General Abdul-Kareem al-Rubaie, the Diala Security Operations chief, told VOI that explosives experts in Diala police managed on Sunday "to defuse 10 explosive charges found on the main road of Zahra village, Baaquba." Baaquba, the capital of Diala, lies 57 km northeast of Baghdad.

5 al-Qaeda members killed in al-Khalis

Five gunmen of al-Qaeda Organization in Iraq, including three amirs (leaders) of the self-styled Islamic State of Iraq, were killed in clashes that erupted on Sunday morning between gunmen and security forces in the district of al-Khalis, 15 km north of Ba'aquba, police said.

Eastern Baghdad blast leaves 5 casualties

Baghdad, Nov 11, (VOI) – 

Two individuals were killed and three others wounded in an explosive charge attack in eastern Baghdad, Iraqi police said on Sunday.

"An explosive device went off after a U.S. army patrol vehicle had passed al-Baladiyyat area in eastern Baghdad, killing two individuals and wounding three others," a police source, who requested anonymity, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). Yesterday, an explosive charge was detonated in the same area, which lies south of Sadr city, killing two individuals and injuring seven others.

23 gunmen killed in clashes near Samarra

Twenty-three gunmen were killed in violent clashes between warring armed factions east and south of the city of Samarra, an official security source in Salah al-Din province said on Saturday.

4 U.S. casualties in Diala

Baghdad, Nov 10, (VOI) – 

A U.S. soldier was killed and three others wounded as a result of an explosive device attack during a military operation in Diala province, the U.S. army in Iraq said on Saturday. "The soldiers belonged to the Multi-National Force (MNF) in Diala. One soldier died of wounds he sustained during a combat mission in Diala on Friday. The three wounded soldiers were rushed to an MNF hospital," according to a U.S. army statement received by the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). The death brings the number of U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq since the March 2003 invasion to 3,859 as officially reported by the U.S. army. Of this number, 15 were killed during this month. 39 soldiers were killed in October 2007, the lowest number of U.S. fatalities since March 2006. It is also less than the number of troops killed last September: 66. Last August saw the death of 84 U.S. soldiers. November 2004 remains the month with the highest number of U.S. deaths – 137, which witnessed fierce clashes between U.S. forces and armed groups in Falluja, the largest city in the predominantly Sunni Iraqi province of al-Anbar.

Four killed in two separate attacks in Daila

Diala, Nov 10, (VOI) – 

An Iraqi serviceman and two al-Qaeda gunmen were killed during clashes on Saturday morning between army forces and al-Qaeda militants in Diala, while a civilian was killed in a separate attack in Baaquba, authorities said. "An Iraqi soldier and two al-Qaeda militants were killed during armed clashes that broke out this morning between a force from the Iraqi army's fifth division and al-Qaeda gunmen in Diala's al-Uhaimer village," an official security source from Diala province, who preferred to remain unnamed, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). 

The source did not provide further details. Meanwhile, "gunmen belonging to al-Qaeda opened fire on a civilian in Baaquba's al-Katoun area, killing him on the spot," the same source indicated. Baaquba, the capital city of Diala province, lies 57 km northeast of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.

Casualties from Mosul blast up to 20

Mosul, Nov 10, (VOI) – 

Casualties from the blast that ripped through a bus in western Mosul on Saturday morning reached 20, including four dead and 16 wounded, according to police sources.

"Casualties from the explosive charge attack that targeted a Coaster-modeled bus in Mosul's western area of al-Boursa this morning have increased to four dead and 16 wounded," the head of Ninewa operations room, Brigadier Abdul Kareem al-Juburi, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). An official source from Ninewa operations room told VOI earlier today that two civilians were killed and 15 others, including a woman and her daughter, were wounded in the attack. Mosul, the capital city of Ninewa province, lies 405 km north of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.

12 casualties from two blasts in Baghdad

Two individuals were killed and ten others wounded in two separate explosions that took place in central and eastern Baghdad on Saturday morning, authorities said.

"An explosive charge went off on Saturday morning in Baghdad's eastern area of al-Baladiyyat, killing two individuals and wounding seven others," the source, who preferred to remain unnamed, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). Meanwhile, "another explosive device was detonated near al-Kilani gas station in central Baghdad, wounding three individuals," the same source noted. The wounded were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment, the source added, noting that police forces sealed off the two scenes immediately after the blasts.

Three blasts leave 14 casualties in Diala

Ba'aquba, Nov 9, (VOI)- 

Four people, including three policemen, were killed, and ten others, including seven policemen, were injured in three explosions in separate places in Diala, a police source said on Friday. "A roadside bomb went off on Friday afternoon in Um al-Etham village in Ba'aquba, killing one civilian and injuring six others," the source told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). "Another bomb was detonated this afternoon too in the main road in Neft Khana region in Khaneqeen district, northeast of Baaquba, leaving two policemen dead and one injured," he added. 

"The blast caused severe damage to a police vehicle," the source also said. "In Khaneqeen district, a third bomb exploded in a street in al-Sa'adiya region targeting a police vehicle patrol, killing one policemen and wounding three, in addition to damaging the vehicle," he continued. Ba'aquba, the capital of Diala, 57 km northeast of Baghdad.

Explosion kills officer, injures three bodyguards near Kirkuk

Kirkuk, Nov 9, (VOI)- An Iraqi army officer was killed and three of his bodyguards were injured on Friday afternoon, when an explosive charge went off targeting his motorcade southwest of Kirkuk, an Iraqi army source said.

"A roadside bomb was detonated at 2:50 pm on Friday targeting the motorcade of an Iraqi army officer in Riyadh-al-Fatha road, southwest of Kirkuk," the source told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI) under condition of anonymity. "The blast killed the captain instantly and injured three of his bodyguards," he noted. "The officer is an official in the 4th brigade of the Iraqi army stationing in the city of Tikrit," the source also said. "An army force sent the body to the forensic medicine department and rushed the wounded to a nearby hospital for treatment," he continued. Kirkuk is located 250 km northeast of Baghdad.

Seven al-Qaeda members killed, injured in Diala

Ba'aquba, Nov 9, (VOI)- 

Seven people, including four al-Qaeda members, were killed and three more were injured on Friday in an attack by al-Qaeda-linked group on a village in Khalis district, an official security source said.

"Al-Qaeda linked group waged an armed attack targeting al-Bu Aziz village in Khalis district, during which three civilians and four gunmen were killed and three more were injured," the source, who asked not to be named, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). 

"The attack started from al-Eihemar and Albu Taema villages in Khalis and witnessed the use of light and medium weapons," he also said, adding no more details. Diala has been the scene of a security operation codenamed Arrowhead Ripper for four months now. It is being conducted by Iraqi and U.S. forces with the aim of tracking down armed groups spreading through a number of areas in the province. Khalis is located 15 km, north of Ba'aquba, the capital of Diala, which lies 57 km northeast of Baghdad.

Car bomb in Huweija leaves 5 casualties

Kirkuk, Nov 9, (VOI) – 

One policeman was killed and four others wounded in a car bomb attack on a police patrol in the district of al-Huweija, southwestern Kirkuk, on Friday, police said. The explosive vehicle "went off near a patrol of al-Huweija police, killing one policeman, wounding four others and severely damaging the car," a security source, who asked not to have his name mentioned, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). 

"The body was taken to the morgue while the wounded rushed to the al-Huweija hospital for treatment," he said. Huweija is 70 km southwestern Kirkuk. A medic from the district's hospital said that the condition of the four wounded policemen was "stable," adding their wounds resulted from shrapnel they received from the car bombing." Kirkuk lies 250 km northeast of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.

Iraqi-U.S. forces kill, capture 58 gunmen in Ninewa

Joint Iraqi-U.S. forces killed 14 gunmen and captured 44 others within Operation Iron Hammer carried out in different areas of the province of Ninewa since Monday, the U.S. army said on Thursday.

 

Iraqi Security Forces, backed by Coalition Soldiers, killed 14 (Iraqi) fighters and detained 44 in a series of intelligence-driven strikes and early morning raids that took place within the last 48 hours as part of Operation Iron Hammer, the U.S. army said in a statement received by the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI).

AP Headline: Iraqi PM Sees Decline in Baghdad Attacks

BAGHDAD (AP) -- 

Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki said Sunday suicide attacks and other bombings in the Iraqi capital have dropped dramatically since last year's high. 

Despite security improvements, a trickle of violence continued Sunday, with at least 10 people were killed or found dead around the country. The toll included a 12-year-old girl in Baghdad's Baladiyat area, who was killed by a roadside bomb that aimed for an American convoy but missed its target, police said.
