WASHINGTON DC, USA, 5 June 2007 (Daily Times): Around a hundred spirited demonstrators, representing activist groups and political parties, rallied in front of the White House on Sunday [3 June 2007] demanding an end to military rule in Pakistan.

Some of the protesters had come from out of town, including the states of New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, West Virginia, Virginia, [Maryland] and Wisconsin. Duly represented were Pakistani political parties, including the PPP [Pakistan Peoples Party], PML-N [Pakistan Muslim League] and [Pakistan] Tehreek-e-Insaf [PTI]. The rally continued for two hours [from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.] despite a steady rain that kept falling on what had begun as a clear summer day.

The civil society groups out on the street included, the [Human Rights Foundation (HRF), Coalition for Restoration of Democracy in Pakistan (CRDP), American Pakistani Physicians for Justice & Democracy (APPJD)], Asian American Network Against Abuse of Human Rights (ANAA), Sindhi Association of North America (SANA), [World Sindhi Institute (WSI)], plus several others. Among those who addressed the demonstration were Dr. Amna Buttar and Dr. Ghazala Kazi.

Enthusiastic anti-Musharraf and pro-democracy slogans were raised by the demonstrators, some of whom had brought their children. They paraded up and down in front of the White House, with the police keeping an eye on the proceedings which remained peaceful.

The protestors called for [Pakistan Army Dictator-Tyrant] General [Pervez] Musharraf to go [resign from the Presidency and the Pakistan Army] and for full restoration of civilian rule. They also demanded free and fair elections under a neutral interim administration [Caretaker Cabinet of Real Reformers].

Another rally is planned for Brooklyn, New York on June 16 [2007], which marks the first death anniversary of NWFP journalist Hayatullah, who was killed in mysterious circumstances. Another rally is to take place in Manhattan [New York] the next day, which is expected to be attended by [PTI Chairman] Imran Khan.

WASHINGTON DC, USA, 5 June 2007 (DAWN): Representatives of various Pakistani political groups and human rights organisations protested outside the White House on Sunday evening [3 June 2007], urging the Bush Administration to support democratic forces in Pakistan.

Speakers reminded [U.S.] President [George W.] Bush of his pledge to support [real] democracy in the Islamic World. Pakistan, they said, already had a developed political infrastructure but it needs support from democratic forces across the world to convince the [ruling political] military to return to barracks.

Representatives of the Pakistan Peoples Party [PPP] and PML-N [Pakistan Muslim League] also urged the Bush Administration to use its influence to enable former prime ministers Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif to return home and participate in the forthcoming elections [in Pakistan].

Other speakers asked President Bush to advise Pervez Musharraf to quit the military [and the Presidency].

Some speakers criticised the MQM [Muttahida Quami Movement] for its role in the Karachi killings, charging that the party is linked to the Musharraf regime and enjoyed its patronage. The Karachi murders and lawlessness has exposed the real culprits and their patrons, they claimed.
