UNRWA appeals for the reopening of the crossings into the Gaza Strip Date: 20 / 06 / 2007 Time: 13:46 Gaza – Ma'an – The director general of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine refugees (UNRWA) operations in the Gaza Strip, John Ging, called for reopening the crossings, especially Karni Crossing in order to allow the passage of essential goods and medicines to the Gaza Strip. Ging said in a meeting with the governor of Gaza City, Muhammad Al-Qudwa, on Wednesday that he can perceive the seriousness of the disaster faced by Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. Ging emphasized that UNRWA will enact its duties and redouble efforts to counter the current crisis. He called on the international community to intensify efforts and to not abandon the Palestinian people. The governor of Gaza City appealed to UNRWA and all international organizations to intensify efforts to provide relief to the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip. He added that the governorate of Gaza City has announced a state of emergency. The governor also said that an Israeli decision to prevent the entry of goods into the Gaza Strip might result in a humanitarian crisis.
