Haniyeh Approves Jimmy Carter's Mediation Between Fateh and Hamas

Haniyeh approves Jimmy Carter's intervention in Palestinian affairs

Date: 22 / 07 / 2007 Time: 17:42

Gaza – Ma'an –

Deposed Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh on Sunday stated his approval of the intervention of former US President Jimmy Carter in the Palestinian domestic (Hamas-Fateh) crisis.

Haniyeh's comments were made during a meeting with director of the Carter Centre in the West Bank, Scott Caster, in Haniyeh's office in Gaza City.

Caster conveyed to Haniyeh Carter's willingness to mediate in the domestic Palestinian dispute.

Haniyeh said that any mediation should be just and based on Palestinian legitimacy.

Carter's latest book 'Palestine Peace not Apartheid' was published in 2006.

(In his book, Carter praised Palestinian elections, highlighted Palestinian inalienable rights, and pointed the finger to the Israeli aggression, showing that it has been the Israelis who have been obstructing all peace efforts to solve the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. Supporters of Israel in the US have launched a hate and smearing campaign against him).

British advisor: Blair will fail in his M.E. mission if he ignores Hamas

[ 23/07/2007 - 09:22 AM ]

LONDON, (PIC)--

Daniel Levi, the advisor of the quartet committee’s envoy to the Middle East Tony Blair, has warned that Blair would fail in his mission to revive the peace process in the region unless the West starts direct and official contacts with Hamas Movement.

In an interview with the British Daily Telegraph newspaper published on Sunday, Levi affirmed that efforts of the West to bolster stand of PA chief Mahmoud Abbas will definitely fail if the West ignores that fact that Hamas is practically dominating Gaza Strip which is an important part of the PA.

He also warned that the West’s sidelining of Hamas could help Al-Qaeda group to gain a foothold in Gaza Strip and gain support from the disgruntled Palestinian citizens.

“Hamas must be included in any political process in the region”, Levi was quoted by the paper as affirming.

He said that for any peace process in the region to succeed, Hamas must participate in that process, explaining that Blair grasps that fact very well after his experience in Northern Ireland.

Moreover, Levi deplored the stand of US president George W. Bush of rejecting talks with Hamas Movement, affirming that such stand proved to be futile and even derailed the peace process in the region.

Blair is due in the Middle East this week as an envoy of the Quartet committee that comprises the USA, the EU, the UN, and Russia; but widely believed to be dominated by the US administration.

Carter’s mediation:

In an unrelated matter, the legitimate prime minister of the PA caretaker government Ismail Haneyya welcomed the request of former US president Jimmy Carter to mediate in resolving the current political standoff in the Palestinian arena.

Carter expressed his desire to do so through Scott Custer, the director of Carter’s center in the West Bank, who was received by Haneyya at his office in Gaza city Sunday.

Haneyya described Carter as democracy and legal activist, citing his role in supervising the PA legislative elections last year that Hamas won and was described then as the most transparent and honest elections in the region.

But although Haneyya welcomed any effort to patch up inter-Palestinian political differences, he stressed that any initiative or mediation in this regard must be based on justice and on respect of the Palestinian legitimacy produced by the elections.

Haneyya also telephoned PFLP leader Abdul Rahim Malloh who was freed from Israeli jails Friday and congratulated him, affirming the right of all Palestinian captives in Israeli jails to be freed.

He also asserted that his government and Hamas Movement were and still are advocating Palestinian national dialogue as the only solution to bail the Palestinian arena out of the current political crises.
