Barghouthi warns of attempts to turn Palestinian state into weak self-rule [ 23/07/2007 - 03:11 PM ] RAMALLAH, (PIC)-- Palestinian MP Mustafa Al-Barghouthi, the secretary general of the National Initiative party, has warned of Israeli premier Ehud Olmert's statements on alleged withdrawals from the West Bank and of attempts to turn the concept of establishing "a Palestinian state" into minuscule self-rule or into a state of provisional borders imposed on the Palestinian people within divided lands. "Olmert's talk about partial withdrawals without including the dismantling of any settlements or even Jerusalem or the Jordan Valley area, which account for 24% of the West Bank, with emphasis on the non-return to the borders of June 4, 1967 is meant to distort the idea of a full sovereign Palestinian state, to convert it into ghettos, to strengthen the apartheid system and to make the Palestinians live forever in conditions of "racist" separation worse than what had prevailed in South Africa, Barghouthi stated in a press release on Monday. He explained that Olmert hopes to receive approval from the PA presidency to his new plan and to exploit the state of Palestinian division to block the way before a just and comprehensive settlement.
