Palestinian businessmen urge Quartet to lift the siege of Gaza

Date: 17 / 07 / 2007 Time: 10:39

Gaza - Ma'an -

Palestinian businessmen have urged the international Quartet to lift the siege imposed on the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

In a statement, they urged former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, who is to take up his new role as Quartet envoy this week, to end the economic embargo. The business leaders declared that 65,000 Palestinians are unemployed in the strip, and warned that the situation there remains perilously close to total collapse.

The UNRWA Gaza director, John Ging warned of the dangers of the status quo, and urged UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to immediately intervene in order to lift the siege. "Gaza is reaching a stage in the next few weeks, in which it will depend totally on foreign aid."
