Hamas-Fatah dispute over assignment of weekend days causes trouble for Palestinian workers

Date: 14 / 07 / 2007 Time: 12:31

Gaza - Ma'an –

The General Union for Palestinian Laborers has expressed its disappointment over decisions made by both the deposed government of Hamas and the emergency government of Fateh. The disagreement stems from decisions over the official days off – Thursday and Friday or Friday and Saturday - and decrees regarding the cancellation of contracts.

The union, now reportedly under the control of Hamas in the Gaza Strip, called for setting workers aside from political differences, and "to end their abuse".

The union criticized Hamas, alleging mistreatment of workers who attempted to follow the decisions of the Emergency Government. The Emergency Government has announced that the official days off will be Friday and Saturday. Meanwhile, the Hamas movement has decreed that official weekend days are Thursday and Friday.

The statement urged the deposed government to return the union premises as they were before the 14th of June, so that the union, and other departments and services, may carry out their work as usual.

The statement also called on President Abbas and his Emergency Government to assign part of the government's budget to the relief of the laborers and their families.
