Diala, Dec 30, (VOI) –

Three civilians were wounded in an attack by gunmen from the Islamic State of Iraq group in Diala's Khalis district, police said on Sunday. "Gunmen belonging to the Islamic State of Iraq launched an attack against al-Ujaimi village in Khalis district, (15 km) north Ba'aquba, wounding three civilians," a police source in Diala, who requested anonymity, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). 

The Islamic State of Iraq has emerged in the wake of U.S. troops' thrust into Iraq in April 2003. Ba'aquba, the capital of Diala province, lies 57 km northeast of Baghdad.

Gunmen kidnap 13 persons at fake checkpoint

Baghdad, Dec 30, (VOI) – 

Unknown gunmen kidnapped 13 individuals at a fake checkpoint in Salah al-Din province, Iraqi police said on Sunday.

"At an early hour on Sunday morning, gunmen ... staged a fake checkpoint on a road linking Sulayman Bik to Touz Khormato districts, stopped three civilian vehicles and took their 13 passengers to an unknown destination," the source, who requested anonymity, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). 

"The checkpoint was staged at an intersection near Sarha Bridge, which was destroyed more than six months ago," the source explained. The source did not provide further details.

Touz Khormato lies 180 km northeast of the Iraqi capital, while Tikrit, the capital city of Salah al-Din province, lies 175 km north of Baghdad.

3 bodies found near Ba'aquba- U.S. army

Baghdad, Dec 30, (VOI) – 

Three bodies believed to be part of a mass grave was found northwest of Ba'aquba during a military operation in the city, the U.S. army said.

"Responding to a tip from an Iraqi citizen, Coalition Forces discovered a body buried approximately eight miles northwest of Ba'aquba Dec. 28. Several days before, Iraqis had dug up two skeletons at the same location," read a U.S. army statement received by the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). 

"The body discovered by CF was shot in the head, and his hands were tied in front of him. It appeared that he had been in the ground at least a month." "The Iraqi citizen reported the site contained approximately 20 bodies," according to the statement." 

"Soldiers from Company C, 1st Battalion, 38th Infantry Regiment, 4th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division conducted a search of the area and discovered assorted clothing on the ground approximately 275 meters west of the uncovered body," it noted. 

"The find coincides with reports that al-Qaeda in Iraq used a nearby shack as a prison and torture chamber for kidnap victims," the statement said quoted Lt. Col. Patrick Mackin, 4-2 SBCT intelligence officer, who believes more bodies are buried in the area.

Kidnapped policeman's body found in Samawa

Muthanna, Dec 29, (VOI) – 

The corpse of a policeman was found three days after his kidnapping by unidentified gunmen in the city of al-Samawa, a security source in Muthanna police said on Saturday.

"Policeman Abdul-Amir Jassem Muhammad, 52, was found killed in the area of al-Aridiyat, (35 km) northnern Samawa, on Friday," the source, who declined to have his name mentioned, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI).

Muhammad "had been kidnapped on Wednesday near the Muthanna Police Academy in Samawa," the source said, adding "investigations were underway to unravel the incident."
He did not give further details.

Informed sources told VOI that Muhammad's son "is one of the suspects involved in the assassination of former Muthanna governor Muhammad Ali al-Hassani, who was killed in an improvised explosive device attack near the town of al-Rumaitha, (30 km) northern Samawa, on August 20, 2007."

Samawa, the capital of Muthanna, lies 280 km south of Baghdad.

Two unidentified bodies found in Baghdad

Iraqi police patrols found on Saturday two unidentified bodies dumped in different parts of the Iraqi capital Baghdad, an interior ministry source said. "Police patrols found two unknown corpses dumped in various parts of Baghdad," the source, who asked not to be named, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). 

The source added "one body was found in al-Amin neighborhood in Baghdad's eastern side of Rasafa, while the second body was found in al-Aamel neighborhood, western Baghdad." "The bodies found bore signs of gunshot wounds to different parts of the body, mainly to the head," he noted. SK

14 gunmen killed, 261 Iraqis arrested in Baghdad

Baghdad, Dec 29, (VOI) – 

Iraqi security forces killed 14 gunmen and arrested 261 suspected (of opposing the US-backed government) and wanted persons in Baghdad's al-Karkh and al-Rasafa areas within the Baghdad security plan Operation Fardh al-Qanoon during the past ten days, the plan's official spokesman said on Saturday. "Iraqi security forces managed to liberate seven hostages, defuse nine car bombs and 114 explosive charges," Qassem Atta told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI) by telephone. 

"Large quantities of arms, ammunitions and explosives were seized during the operations," he said. The Iraqi government is carrying out a wide-scale security campaign codenamed Fardh al-Qanoon, or law imposing, since mid-February 2007 in a bid to clean Baghdad and its environs of any gunmen. SK

15 killed, 8 wounded in security incidents until Saturday afternoon

At least 15 people were killed, eight others wounded and 39 people arrested in acts of violence that took place in different areas in Iraq during the past 24 hours until Saturday afternoon in Baghdad, security sources said.

"The Iraqi army force raided a house near the headquarters of Iraqi Accordance Front (IAF) leader Adnan al-Dulaimi in al-Adl neighborhood, western Baghdad, after receiving intelligence tips on a cache containing weapons and explosives," Brig. Qassem Atta, the official spokesman for the Fardh al-Qanoon security plan, said in a press conference at the cabinet's general secretariat building.
A security source said an educationalist of the name Ra'ad Badai was killed by unidentified gunmen fire right after he stepped out of his house in the district of al-Za'afaraniya, southern Baghdad.
The U.S. army on Friday said that the Iraqi Air Force received a new, technologically advanced aircraft, unequipped with sensors, from the Multi-National Force (MNF).

"The Beechcraft KingAir 350 was delivered to the Iraqi Air Force through Foreign Military Sales, a process that allows the Iraqi government to purchase military equipment and supplies from other countries, including the United States, with its own money," read a U.S. army statement received by VOI.

On Saturday, also the U.S. army said coalition forces killed three persons believed to belong to al-Qaeda in Iraq organization and arrested 34 others during operations in central and northern Iraq.

In Ninewa, a senior security source said on Saturday that seven civilians, including women and children, were wounded in a blast that took place in an eastern Mosul neighborhood.

"Seven civilians, including two women and two children, were injured in a blast that took place at a late hour on Friday night in Mosul's eastern neighborhood of al-Qadissiya," the head of Ninewa police operations room, Brigadier Abdul Kareem al-Juburi, told VOI.
Five gunmen were killed and five others wounded in clashes with police forces in Talafar district on Saturday, police said.
"The clashes broke out in the area of Sheikh Ibrahim in Talafar, (60 km) west of Mosul," Brig. Ibrahim al-Juburi, the Talafar police director, told VOI.

In Ninewa, the province's police media chief survived an attempt on his life when he came under an armed attack in eastern Mosul on Saturday, an official source in the province said.

"Unidentified gunmen opened fire at Brig. Saeed Ahmed Abdullah while shooting the blast that occurred late at night on Friday in the area of al-Qadissiya, eastern Mosul, wounding him slightly. A policeman was killed and another wounded in the attack," the source, who refused to be named, told VOI.

In Kirkuk, two civilians were wounded in an explosive charge attack that targeted a civilian vehicle in the city, Iraqi police said on Saturday.
"An improvised explosive device went off on Saturday morning near a civilian car in al-Mulla Abdullah area, southwestern Kirkuk, wounding two civilians," a police source, who preferred to remain unnamed, told VOI.

Near the city of Kirkuk, a U.S. force arrested a police chief and four of his aides in the district of al-Riad, 60 km southwest of Kirkuk, an Iraqi official police source said.

"The Riad police chief and four assistants were arrested by U.S. forces on Friday evening at the headquarters of the Riad police department," the source, who asked not to be named, told VOI.
In Muthanna, the corpse of a policeman was found three days after his kidnapping by unidentified gunmen in the city of al-Samawa, a security source in Muthanna police said.

U.S. force arrests police chief near Kirkuk

Kirkuk, Dec 29, (VOI) – 

A U.S. force arrested a police chief and four of his aides in the district of al-Riad, 60 km southwest of Kirkuk, an Iraqi official police source said on Saturday. 

"The Riad police chief and four assistants were arrested by U.S. forces on Friday evening at the headquarters of the Riad police department," the source, who asked not to be named, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). The source did not reveal the reasons for the arrests nor VOI managed to contact the U.S. army for comments. Kirkuk lies 250 km northeast of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.

10 gunmen killed, captured in Talafar

Ninewa, Dec 29, (VOI) – 

Five gunmen were killed and five others wounded in clashes with police forces in Talafar district on Saturday, police said. "The clashes broke out in the area of Sheikh Ibrahim in Talafar, (60 km) west of Mosul," Brig. Ibrahim al-Juburi, the Talafar police director, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). 

"One of the captured gunmen was wounded and handed over – along with the bodies – to the Talafar airport, where a U.S. base is headquartered," the source said, adding "two explosives caches found in the area were detonated." The source did not give further details. Mosul, the capital of Ninewa, lies 405, km north of Baghdad.

U.S. army kills 3 Qaeda members, detains 34

Baghdad, Dec 29, (VOI) – 

Coalition forces killed three persons believed to belong to al-Qaeda organization and arrested 34 others during operations in central and northern Iraq, the U.S. army said on Saturday.

"When Coalition forces arrived in the target area, they called for the occupants to come out of the building. The ground force was then engaged by heavy enemy fire, and supporting aircraft was called to suppress the threat. Once the enemy fire ceased, the ground force assessed three terrorists were killed during the engagement," the statement indicated.

"North of Tikrit, Coalition forces captured a wanted individual. In addition to the wanted individual, Coalition forces detained five (Iraqis) during the operation. The ground force detained an additional suspect during an operation south of the city targeting an al-Qaeda in Iraq cell leader believed to be involved in suicide attacks against Coalition forces," the statement added.

"During an operation west of Tarmiyah, Coalition forces captured a wanted individual believed to be a close associate of the al-Qaeda in Iraq senior leader of the network operating north of Baghdad. 

The network is responsible for the majority of car-bombing and improvised explosive device attacks in the area, as well as being involved in extortion, intimidation, weapons trafficking and the facilitation of foreign terrorists. In addition to the wanted individual, the ground force detained 21 (Iraqis) during the series of operations."

IED wounds 2 civilians in Kirkuk

Two civilians were wounded in an explosive charge attack that targeted a civilian vehicle in Kirkuk city, Iraqi police said on Saturday.

"An improvised explosive device went off on Saturday morning near a civilian car in al-Mulla Abdullah area, southwestern Kirkuk, wounding two civilians," a police source, who preferred to remain unnamed, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). The source did not provide further details.

Kirkuk, a mixed city of Kurds, Turkmen, Christians and Arabs, lies 250 km northeast of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.

Mosul blast wounds 7 civilians

Ninewa, Dec 29, (VOI) – 

Seven civilians, including women and children, were wounded in a blast that took place in an eastern Mosul neighborhood, a senior security source said on Saturday.

"Seven civilians, including two women and two children, were injured in a blast that took place at a late hour on Friday night in Mosul's eastern neighborhood of al-Qadisiyya," the head of Ninewa police operations room, Brigadier Abdul Kareem al-Juburi, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI).

Al-Juburi said that the blast was most probably caused by a car bomb, indicating that it caused damage to four nearby houses.

Mosul, the capital city of Ninewa province, lies 402 km north of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.
