The Iraq News Agency (INA) reported on December 28, 2007 that a car bomb exploded at the Aviation (Al-Tayaran) Square, in Baghdad today, killing eight people and injuring thirty.

Four unknown corpses found in Baghdad

Baghdad, Dec 27, (VOI)- 

Iraqi police patrols found four unidentified bodies dumped in different parts of the Iraqi capital Baghdad during the last 24 hours, an interior ministry source said on Thursday. 

"Police patrols found four unknown corpses dumped in various parts of the Baghdad during the last 24 hours," the source, who asked not to be named, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). The source added "one body was found in each of al-Zaafaraniya, al-Qahera and Baghdad al-Jadiydah neighborhoods in Baghdad's east side of Rasafa, while one more body was found in al-Aamel quarter in al-Karkh, western side of Baghdad." "The bodies had gunshot wounds mainly to the head," he said. SK

3 civilians wounded in bomb blast in Baghdad

Baghdad, Dec 27, (VOI)- 

Three civilians were injured on Thursday when an explosive charge went off in central Baghdad, a police source said. "A roadside bomb exploded this afternoon near a fuel station in al-Nedal street in central Baghdad, wounding three civilians," the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). "The explosion caused material damage to nearby buildings," he added. A police source had said earlier that an explosive charge was detonated near a microbus in eastern Baghdad, killing a civilian and injuring nine more.

U.S. army kills 11 al-Mahdi army fighters in Kut

Kut, Dec 27, (VOI)- 

The U.S. army said on Thursday that its forces killed 11 gunmen in the city of Kut during operations targeting "special groups" of armed men (Mahdi Army militiamen).

 Kut, the capital of Wassit province, lies 180 km southeast of Baghdad.

IED explosion leaves 10 casualties in Baghdad

Baghdad, Dec 27, (VOI)- 

One civilian was killed and nine more were injured on Thursday when an improvised explosive device went off near a microbus in eastern Baghdad, a police source said.

"The bomb, planted on a road in al-Baladyat region in eastern Baghdad, exploded while the microbus was passing, killing one civilian and injuring nine," the source told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). "Security forces rushed to the scene, while ambulances carried the wounded to a nearby hospital," he noted.

Cluster bombs kill 4 al-Mahdi army fighters in Wassit

Kut, Dec 27, (VOI)- 

Four fighters of Shiite leader Muqtada al-Sadr's al-Mahdi Army were killed and three others were injured by U.S. helicopters on Thursday in western Kut, a source from al-Sadr's office in Wassit said.

"Four fighters were killed and three were injured when U.S. choppers dropped cluster bombs on al-Jihad neighborhood targeting elements of al-Mahdi army," the source told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI) under condition of anonymity. 

"The bombing targeted some house also," he noted. Meanwhile, eyewitnesses from al-Jihad neighborhood said that the bombing left six civilians injured. "Fierce clashes flared up between elements of al-Mahdi army and U.S. forces at the northern entrance to the neighborhood on Wednesday midnight," an eyewitness said. "U.S. helicopters rushed to the area and dropped cluster bombs targeting al-Mahdi army elements, killing and injuring a number of them," he added. No word was available from the U.S. army on the incident. Kut, the capital of Wassit province, lies 180 km southeast of Baghdad.

Five U.S. soldiers killed, injured in Ninewa

Mosul, Dec 27, (VOI)- 

The U.S. army said that two soldiers were killed and three more were injured while conducting military operations in Ninewa in northern Iraq.
"Two Multi-National Division - North Soldiers died from wounds sustained from small-arms fire while conducting operations in Mosul, Ninewa Province on Dec. 26," the U.S. army said in a statement received by the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI).

"Additionally, three more MND-North Soldiers were wounded in the attack and evacuated to a Coalition hospital," it added.
The deaths bring the number of the U.S. troops killed in Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion in March 2003 to 3,900, according to statistics released by the U.S. army.

Of this number, 19 U.S. soldiers have been killed so far in December 2007.

Last July saw the smallest monthly loss of life for the U.S. army in Iraq this year as 80 U.S. soldiers were killed.

November 2004, which witnessed fierce battles between U.S. forces and armed groups in Falluja city, Anbar province, remains the month that saw the highest U.S. death toll with 137.

April 2004 comes second with 135, followed by May 2007 during which 126 U.S. soldiers were killed.
