Israeli occupation army attacks on Gaza fishermen are destroying their only source of livelihood

Monday August 27, 2007 12:26 by staff - IMEMC News ghassanb at imemc dot org

Dr. Ossamah Al-Farra, the governor of Khan Younis city, located in the southern part of the Gaza strip, has stated that the Israeli occupation army attacks on Gaza fishermen are destroying a vital source of income for Gaza residents.

Talking to reporters in his office, Al-Farra said that those attacks cost the fishermen their livelihood, leaving them and their families with no income.

Al-Farra stated that the governor’s office and the Palestinian Authority have made several attempts to enhance the situation of the fishermen by building development projects and supplying the fishermen with nets, but that continued attacks on the fishermen negate the benefits of these initiatives and lead to a further deterioration in the standard of life for Palestinian fishermen.

During his meeting representatives of donor countries, Al Farra blamed the continued closure of commercial crossing the ongoing economic embargo for the appalling humanitarian condition in the region, adding that hundreds of factories and projects have stopped working because Israeli is not allowing raw materials to enter the Gaza strip.

Dr. Al Farra called on the Palestinian Authority to support fishermen in the region, and encouraged the international community to put pressure on Israel to desist from attacking farmers and fishermen in the region.
