Haniya calls on Egypt to open Rafah crossing away from "Zionist control"

[ 25/08/2007 - 03:31 PM ]

DEIR AL-BALAH, (PIC)--

Ismail Haniya, the premier of the PA caretaker government in Gaza, has called on Egypt to adopt a daring decision and to open the Rafah crossing away from Zionist control.

Speaking at a graduation ceremony in Dair Al-Balah city in central Gaza Strip, Haniya noted that more than 400 Palestinians are now trapped at the Egyptian side of the border.

He said, "We want a political decision (on the part of Egypt) that would agree on turning the Rafah terminal into a pure Egyptian-Palestinian affair away from Zionist control in the passengers' traffic".

The premier appealed to Cairo to support the "oppressed and besieged" Palestinian people.

He affirmed that different kinds of persecution such as blocking terminals, cutting off electricity and water and others were exercised against the Palestinians in a bid to preoccupy them away from essential issues such as the right of return, Jerusalem and prisoners.

Addressing a different issue, Haniya opined that the political and economic siege against the Palestinian people aimed at forcing it to accept the international quartet conditions, shun resistance and approve secret agreements.
