US Soldier Killed, 22 Iraqis Executed by Death Squads, US Air Strike on Tarmiyah Mosque on August 17, 2007 The Iraqi News Agency (INA) reported the following news for today, August 17, 2007. - 19 bodies of Iraqis executed by death squads were found in Baghdad. Three more bodies were found in Haditha. - 3 US soldiers were killed on Thursday and Friday, according to a US spokesperson. - A senior member of the Islamic Virtue party was assassinated in Al-Diwaniya. - Ten Iraqi civilians were kidnapped in Habhab, on a fake checkpoint. AP Headline: 'We Must Unite': Iraq's Prime Minister Tells Sunnis in Saddam's Hometown By SAMEER N. YACOUB Associated Press Writer Aug 17, 2007, 2:37 PM EDT BAGHDAD (AP) -- (US-backed) Iraq's prime minister carried an appeal for unity to Saddam Hussein's hometown Friday and told Sunni tribal chieftains that all Iraqis must join to "to save our coming generations." The dramatic new overtures illuminate al-Maliki's fear of a quick U.S. troop withdrawal and his desperation to show progress on political reconciliation before Petraeus and American Ambassador Ryan Crocker report to Congress next month. Late Thursday, U.S. troops clashed with Iraqis holed up in a mosque north of Baghdad and launched an air-to-ground Hellfire missile into the structure. One American soldier was killed in the fighting, the military said. The soldier was killed and another wounded when troops stationed at a nearby were fired on from the Honest Mohammed Mosque in Tarmiyah. One other U.S. soldier was killed and two wounded Friday in a roadside bombing in eastern Baghdad.
